If you left California, where would you move?

Yes they are pricey buy not in every area. France subsidizes these islands so many goods are actually cheaper there than they are in France. But with how close Dominica is to both, I think the call would be to buy land there and jump on the ferry or your own boat any time you want some Euro vibes. Its about 50 miles either way. Guedeluope is to the North, Martinique to the South.
Nice!

Keep in mind, DR (Dominican Republic) is totally different island than DA (Dominica). Dominica has 365 rivers, a big area of land set aside for the indigenous Kalinago peoples, incredible fertility, super nice people, and the list goes on.
Oh yeah, duh. Dominica has been on my Caribe short list for a while too.

Not in CA, although lived in costal Bay Area for a clip. In OR but it's basically becoming CA esp anywhere in the Portland Metro or Bend area.

Been out west for almost 30 years and I've almost moved back to Rhody a few times. Mom and Dad and most of my family are there and miss the right points. Sure fickle, but kinda tired of sandbars that cant hold a real swell, longshore currents, and vibey crowds at anything that mildly resembles a point. Lack of crowds and scenery used to make up for it, but those days are kinda over. Plus I'd be striking distance from Azores where I have family as well.

Internationally, NZ. Job prospects were good for me there, but it'd probably be Auckland which is super expensive to live and a drive to the surf.

wife owns a condo in Rio - Barra da Tijuca - a relatively nice section....but Rio always has that disconcerting anything-can-happen-at-any-time-right-out-of-nowhere vibe. we have family in Saquarema, a pretty cool beach town up north of Rio with some good surf, but it's a little remote for my taste.
I haven't stayed in Saquarema but I've posted up in about a dozen other towns in Brazil similar to it. What I like is how there is always a functioning town with all the basics and social life that is centered around/close to the beach. No country does this as well as Brazil does IMO. I could easily do long stretches in some of those towns.

i know a lot of the British and Euro retirees and ex--pats end up in Vietnam, Thailand etc...i have no experience in the Far East but i think it would be worth a trip to check it out and get a feel for it.
I could do it during certain times of the year, but not year round.

You nailed it, it's all about personal security. Prices are high and all but nothing that would scare off someone retiring in US dollars.

After being in California for 1 year, one of those things I noticed and really enjoyed as a brazilian was being able to stop at a red light and not having to keep looking over my shoulders and figuring out where I would flee to if approached. That personal security feeling is usually underrated for people who live in relatively safe countries.
So, so true. I spent a lot of time in eastern Jamaica throughout the 90's - particularly Kingston. The surf is incredible. But it's no joke down there, and you really have to be on guard all the damn time. I've seen some crazy sh!t there, but nowhere near as crazy as what some of my Jamaican friends have seen/barely lived through.

You guys thinking about leaving, how do I swoop in?

If I ditch the wife I might try to hang my hat with an american girl (by that I mean elder) looking for a not rich, semi-bald, semi-not-fat, regular- sized dick exotic brazilian for that good old green card that everyone seems to be after.

If I left California, I would leave the US all together. Luckily, I'm an international mutt, with multiple citizenships. I would probably declare Montenegro or Serbia as my country because income tax is only 10%, but live mostly in Costa Rica or Nicaragua. The problem with US citizenship is you have to declare all foreign income, so you can't avoid taxes. It's better to expatriate your US citizenship. There are a few countries that allow you to buy citizenship. Montenegro offers citizenship by investment. You buy into a real estate development, like a hotel, casino anything that produces jobs for $100K, you get citizenship. This is why that country has sky rocketed as a foreign investor tax haven. It's like Monaco for the new mafia. Uruguay also looks awesome, low taxes at 12% max, after 5 years residence you can get citizenship, plus it has surf.

I've got a couple of surfing years left and wouldn't mind spending them in tropical warm lefts. Pavones area would work.

it's draining, living like that.....i didn't realize it when i was young - grew up in a ghetto in NJ, used to work in East Oakland CA as a young man, had that wariness baked into me. but then i did 10 years in Idaho, and now 20 more on this little NC barrier island and i don't want to ever live again in a place where personal physical safety is a real daily concern. that would definitely be a factor in where i might go next.

The Big Island. We have a plot of land there that the lady and I will probably retire to. I gotta be near the ocean.

I'd also love to spend time in Amsterdam and France.

BTW, I still feel CA is one of the greatest places on the planet and I feel lucky that I've lived almost my whole life here.
No way I would live BI. Esp if I was a haole. Just asking to get phucked with by tweakers and the like.

Poss Kona side but not likely.

How would haole do in HOVE (assuming said haole has some soul and some respect for the locals)?
