This is exactly what I'm on about. It isn't just a cold. It is a variation on a cold. It is literally a different version of the common cold. It is not a new pox, or ebola. We have all seen and heard stories about the 1/1000 because if something happens to a small percentage of unlucky people you will hear about it, that's how we do news. it is unfair to say for some people it is really bad and for some people it is just the sniffles. That's like framing gambling as some "people go in the casino and win the jackpot, some people break even."It's definitely not just a cold. I've seen younger, fit people be laid-out for two weeks with this with lingering symptoms. Some people go to the hospital. Some people die. For some people, it's just the sniffles. There's no way to know beforehand how your body will respond, hence the need for vaccines if you haven't already gotten COVID.
I'm not saying the risk of COVID is a 10. For your age group, the risk of hospitalization is about 1 in 50, but the risk of COVID infection over the long run is unity so your risk is probably 1 in 50, increasing every year you get older. The vaccines are definitely less risky than the COOF for your/my age group, and I trust the people at the hospital even less. In my experience, they make bureaucratic decisions for reasons of profit rather than health. This is exactly what I'm on about. It isn't just a cold. It is a variation on a cold. The "it isn't 0, so it must be 10" thinking sucks. The truth is that you, personally, (regardless of who you are) are reducing but, not eliminating, a risk that starts out very, very small by getting vaccinated (over and over, apparently). The greater effect is supposed to be that enough vaccinated people means the small percentage that need help will be able to get it.
Trying to convince people that they need to get vaccinated, and again, and again, and one more time, so far, because if they don't they could go to the hospital and die is dishonest. It's treating us like we can't be told the truth, but need to be lied to in order to be coerced into the desired behavior.
As well, I'm not trying to call it a 0. I think a lot of people would appreciate honesty regarding their personal risk, along with respect for their risk management choices. All we keep getting are lies coupled with social bullying, and the smaller the risk seems to get, the harder the one side digs its heels in.I'm not saying the risk of COVID is a 10. But I agree that the media is framing it as a 10.
Right. I'm in favor of the Swedish approach: have honest government officials, make the vaccine available but do not mandate it, realize that public health is more than just the virus. They got to a higher vaccination rate very quickly. Mandates are a mistake people will fight hard for bodily autonomy. This is a well-known fact. So even if you win the first round of getting more people vaccinated to keep a job, the resentment mandates build against the government are enormous. Regarding social bullying, only half of a population will believe propaganda in whatever form. There is, therefore, an upper bound on its effectiveness. As well, I'm not trying to call it a 0.
