Ooh got ya. I’d like to keep a cap on the truck and avoid the external rack like I’ve done on my old truck. Not sure about using the fiberglass cap for support long term.
LOTS of options for sure. With an RTT you keep both on the truck
These are popular also

Tradesman makes a nice non Fiberglass topper

I like that set up a lot. Not too far off from the previous one I posted. Those look possibly better. I think one thing it will come down to mainly is weight and keeping it down. This is a work and personal truck that I need to tow with.

As rad as those popup things are I sorta prefer stealth or not. If it's not a truck bed with a shell or a van I'd usually be pitching a tent or backpacking. It would be an epic long Baja/Mex trip setup where you're dealing with lots of wind.

I agree. Sleep in the back of my tacoma for weeks at a time. Any material gets all flappy noisey in windy zones.

seems like everywhere I camp I use my truck while I'm there so my 150 dollar tent is perfect. I don't think I'd ever consider one of those rooftop tents unless I was moving a lot on a long trip.

Guy I know just bought a Sprinter.

He lives downtown in a high rise and has one garage parking space that he uses for his SUV.

I asked him where he's planing to park the Sprinter.

"Uhhh, good question."

I'd love to have a camper van, but that is some straight up discretionary income sh!t that I don't have. My mrs and I rented one of those Escape Vans (ours was a 90's converted Econoline, no tent top ). It was cool enough, but it left a lot to be desired in terms of comfort and convenience. The kitchen was useless as it was just some drawers and a sink. It is REALLY nice to be able to stand up in your van. It's even better if you can stand up with your bed still in place. You couldn't do either in this rig.

It would be cool to go in on a van with someone you really trust and/or go on trips with regularly, like a lot of people do with boats. But honestly, unless I went full height, stand straight up in it, van style, I would probably just buy a truck with a full size bed, a shell, and drop a platform in it.

Most people with pickups nowadays have the four doors with super short little beds. I could never really understand that. Can't leave even a shortboard in the back...I guess yo could sleep in the back in the fetal position...

I had a quad cab Tacoma with a shell. I was able to squeeze a 6'4" in pretty well. I think I may have wedged a 6'10" in but it had a fair amount of rocker and I think I had it diagonal AND sort of angled up at one end.

I tried to sleep in the back with a tent cover. The idea was you could open the tailgate and the tent covering would allow for the extra space. It was pretty pointless. I slept better just by crawling into the back seat.

plywood seems super heavy

I would totally overdo the whole thing and make the cabinetry using composite sandwich!

yes, crazy amount of Shortbed trucks. I wouldn't fit and barely do in my 6' Tacoma.

Had a 4x4 Tundra with a Longbed and that was amazing...Miss that truck

I had a Ford F250 with an inline 6 and four on the floor. I miss that truck, but make do with my Vanagon.

Bought the blue one for $4500. Sold it for $9000 after 7 years. Bought this one for $12,500 3 years ago. It had a new Audi motor with only 25,000 miles on it. The previous owner was an old JPL engineer from Denmark who did the engine swap himself (married to the Little Old Lady from Pasadena). I put a few grand into it and have had offers of $25,000, but for the moment I'm not interested in selling.

Year and a half. Same time as eligibility for retirement. I have to figure out how to pay for it on what will be close to minimum wage. Maybe two years of cummunity college and then scholarships for being from a low income family? CC would be a shame as she has a 4.2 gpa....not bragging but...what's up with kids these days?
