like every industry at this late hour, the surf industry owes its existence to consumption.

so i know its impossible on a human level to just stop but i think andreinis take is beautifully appropriate for the times.

its a big old timeout, we are not stressing. you all got plenty of boards to ride on the limited number of waves on tap. so be happy and thankful for what youve been given and lets see how everybody is feeling a year from now because surfing was never supposed to be about rampant consumption now was it

should say thats my take on it. i know marc a little bit and if questioned on it he would probably give a little grin and say something like, we are a small crew and we can only make 5 or so boards a week. with all the back log we have right now, its just not fair to everyone who wants a board to make them get in line and wait so long.

We give our glassers whatever they can handle in order to have a 10-14 day turnover max. So once your board is shaped we will 0nly send it to a glasser that is going to get it done, not have it sitting in line for weeks on end. Occasionally a board will get "missed" by them (without fail it will be the most complicated glassjob- resin tints, extra large guns, etc.) and it will linger in glassing limbo longer than expected, but that is the exception and not the rule. We keep our glassers happy by paying full-pop and on time, no matter that we are giving them the bulk of their work, and in return they take good care of us and get boards through as quickly as they can while still maintaining their high-quality workmanship.
As it should be

I can't imagine any top board builders shaped blank having to wait 2 months at a glass shop for a glass job after its shaped

Lots of options in Hawaii and the west coast to move your work to

I would question being told so

Anyone tried Roberts or Surf Rx turn around time lately? They both always have a fun looking menu, just never quite got to pulling the trigger.
In March the turnaround on my Surf Rx custom was 11 days...poly, channel bottom, spray. (If I remember correctly they initially estimated 4 weeks.) It was my first board from them, their customer service and communication are great.

Ok, I get that more people have free time to surf, but why is everybody willing to pay more now?
What is that catalyst? Are people making more money? More time so they can surf more and don't mind spending to surf more?
Seems weird, but I'm just as guilty.
Maybe too much time on the interwebs yolo'ing.
for me, it was a mix of cash saved during slower months of lockdown and urgency of “gotta get my order in due to lead times”.

it’s toilet paper 4.0.

People got stimulus checks. Tech bros got stimulus checks and stock options which have appreciated with inflation. A lot of people aren't really working now. What is work? Is my job essential? What is money? Is it real?

I went to pick up a local shaper board last weekend. It's a little 5'4 quad. Took it home and noticed it felt heavy. Weighed it and it was 7 pounds 5 ounces. Emailed shaper. He told me to bring it back. I did, he said yes it's heavy, do you want to remake it? I said nah I didn't want to wait another 4 months so I grabbed something from his stock in exchange and he also gave me a set of Akila Aipa fins to make up for it. Thought that was cool. He told me he could sell my heavy one easy.
more time on the internet, seeing all the boar porn on IG, plus boredom, plus not spending $$ going on as many trips

Malcom Campbell has quality control issues with concave bottom not all glasser's/sanders can handle.

No stimulus but I worked my ass of the whole time and did a bunch of travel. When traveling for work, you're basically living for free so you save some money that way. No big personal trips last year.

Spent a lot of money on the house, bought a boat, and have been a little yolo on the boards as well.

I just worry about the people spending free money on stupid crap, especially the ones without a sound future.

Low wage employers can't find people to work. Rip the bandaid off. It's coming, anyway, we just need to stop giving away money.

He's definitely mine haha. I'm going to say that in 40 years of ordering customs, it was as good of an experience as I've had, especially as a random new customer, and the unexpected turnaround was just the icing on the cake.

Understand most people did not need any stimulus.

And there is talk of MOAR STIMULUS.

Low wage employers can't find people to work. Rip the bandaid off. It's coming, anyway, we just need to stop giving away money.
The retort going around to this is "WELL EMPLOYERS SHOULD BE PAYING THEM MORE MONEY!!!"

I didn't get a stimulus, and my business had a bad year. But I still added to the quiver.
I bet the biggest factor for many of us is the money saved on entertainment budget with so many activities being unavailable for much of the past year. Bars, restaurants, theaters, date nights, zoos, theme parks, travel, gasoline, vacations, etc. For a family of 4, that really adds up. With a lot of that money not spent, don't feel as guilty ordering or buying boards. It's a cliche, but the wife has been amazoning & ordering online so that packages seem to show up every other day. YOLO

I live in a condo complex with dumpsters. We actually had to upsize our dumpsters due to all the boxes. Recycles was overflowing every week after the pandemic got real. Insanity.
