I like to fuck, take opiates, and clown around.

That is type 1, right?

That said, I never have fun no more.

I just mostly help people.

It sucks. :poop:

We have amusement rides within walking distance of our house. Granted these are small Jersey shore amusement piers but our kids were going on rides regularly from the time they were toddlers. They were totally unimpressed with Disney. Every ride had a half hour or longer wait and it was oppressively hot the day we went. The rest of our trip all they wanted to do was go to the beach and go out on the boat.
From the looks of it your kid would probably have more fun at amusement parks like "Desert Point" than Disney.

Nope.

Includes type II and III.

Type II = The hoops you jump through to score (drugs and women). Also, the constipation from the opiate use.

Type III = Ending up with AIDS from sharing needles or from having unprotected anal sex in exchange for the opiates. Also, jail time for possession and/or or getting fired from your job.

I think it would be very difficult to understand the appeal of DL unless you had a chance to go a few times under optimal conditions; the best being cold, rainy days with few people around.

For one, anyone who is detail oriented, as in appreciation for surfboard craftsmanship, etc, will be blown away by the attention to detail that DL applies to every sq inch of the park. There isn't a short, 1' barrier surrounding flower beds that isn't perfectly painted and maintained; the beds themselves are perfectly rowed & piled, with -0- weeds or dying flowers.

(I assume everyone knows that DL has its own private nursery on site, with an army of maintenance workers/gardeners that come out every night after the park closes for the day.)

This individual perfection of each component part is multiplied by a visual depth technique (like a "wall of sound") that Walt himself was instrumental in developing. Cinderella's castle isn't just a cool looking (fake) building, but the center piece in an extremely well thought out multi-tiered artistic interpretation of 'imagine'.

If you consider the rarity of top level pro athletes, there is an equal and counter group associated with arts & crafts. However, unless they are world recognized, they toil away at places like DL (pretty well comped), applying their skilss to areas/things you wouldn't even consider. That is, until you actually see them and are able to understand what it is that you are seeing.

Two, for kids, there are two primary age groups that love DL: 3-7 years old, and young teens 13-15 (pre driving). The appeal for for young kids is obvious, so it's the young teens that are the wild card. While the boys are often times attracted to MM and other faster thrill rides, the girls like the safety and cute factor of DL. So, guess which way the guys go after blowing off some steam?

The teen thing of course is a night time deal. That's when armies will hang around, mostly socializing, with few bothering to catch a ride.

I get it that some people don't get it. It takes a few times to get the hang of it, and start getting a feel for the appeal. If you went on a hot day in the middle of a vacation week, of course everyone is going to blow a fuse. But even then, the photos and memories will still be there, so that 10-15 years later, it will still be a fun story to tell about how awful it was.

Our last trip to DW (that I mentioned above) in FL still results in periodic retelling to various friends and family, including all the smaller anecdotal stories that individually comprised that horrible day. So, the value alone of propelling stories and shared experiences actually makes it worthwhile in retrospect.

Disney world is much better in my opinion. Disneyland is surrounded by a very dumpy area, there are no good restaurants or nightlife around for miles. The OC is many parts is a sad place. Don't forget all the vagrants on the corners begging for money.

we went to Disney World in the middle of an insane cold
snap in Orlando...we froze the whole time, wearing every
layer of clothing we had packed.

the line for the new 7 Dwarves ride was 3 hours long all
day...and then during the parade it dropped to 45 minutes
so we RAN full sprint across the park and got on.

just as we hit the climax of the ride, the firework display went
off right over our heads....it felt like they were going to land
on our carriage.

totally surreal

Living abroad and deciding where to spend vacation I'm baffled that most people that want to take their kids to Disney will often times choose Disneyworld...

Sure, OC might not be the most awesome place ever... but on a 2 week vacation you are there only during the days you visit the park. you then have the entire State of California at your disposal to do whatever you like, you might even drive to Nevada and enjoy Vegas. potential for a very varied trip.

Instead they go to Orlando and spend 2 weeks going to the parks and shopping, nothing else.

The musicians at DL are pretty good too. For a while, when my daughter was in elementary school, my wife and I used to joke the only live music we saw was at DL's Tomorrowland Terrace...

I understand people who don't like it. It's kind of a weird artificial perfectly manicured world. Like MitchellC says the landscaping is amazing. I really didn't appreciate that part of it until I started working on our garden. It's really like a botanical garden there.

Then there are those couples who wear matching Disney shirts and Mickey Ears and that is bat shiite crazy.

Like afoaf (spell check wants to change your handle to "afoul"), we do a variety of things with my daughter. We are not Disney obsessed. We've been to just about every museum in Los Angeles and as an art teacher have been members at LACMA and MOCA for 20 years. We've had National Park passes for ten years. Been to every park in CA, AZ and UT. We used to go to Italy every summer but now it's every other year. We're lucky because our daughter seems to enjoy it all. Never complains.

Disney is what it is. I like it. Not having been in over three years every now and then I think we should go, but the one day pass is so expensive. I do remember one day- I had surfed really good waves in the morning and that even California Screaming seemed like a tame substitute for the thrill of a good wave. But Disney is better than watching sports on TV. I used to be a sports fan but now days I cannot sit through any kind of game on TV. I always have to get up and go do something. But that's a whole other thread....

So is Vegas. Never had any appeal to me...

Florida has plenty of nice places with plenty of things to do. Cali is now mostly a liberal shithole.

worth the $500?
what was funny was we rented a condo near the parks that
happened to have a jacuzzi and the kids asked if we could
stay home and jacuzzi all day!

I almost murdered them (having had already bought passes)

but, yeah, we did 3 parks in 3 days, brought grandma along
and whooped it up.

also zip lined over alligators at Gator Land and got majorly
rained out on a fan boat outing in the boonies....it was amazing.

I hate disneyword/land and every time I'm dragged there I'm in constant amazement of the families you see there who are spending way beyond their means to go there because it's what they're supposed to do. A right of passage of sorts. What Walt created is evil genius but damn. You can take a family of four to Hawaii for a week for the price of 3 days at Disneyland when you factor in admission, parking, concessions, souvenirs, etc. I'm also amazed at the local season pass holders, I'd rather go to the dentist. And only fat chicks have Disney tattoos.
This x 1,000,000.

OP might have to take one for the team this time to make wifey happy (happy wife, happy life, plus you'll get more nookie), but he should plant in her brain the value of real travel over fake theme parks. A future trip with the kiddies to Yosemite or Yellowstone or Hawaii or Costa Rica or wherever beats D-Land hands down, and your kids will end up having a better adventure and their lives will be enriched and maybe they'll grow up to get the travel bug, which is just about always a good thing IMO.

I was escorted to DL detention and banned from the park forever!

This was back in late 70's

We got caught out of bounds. It was a trip but even back then their surveillance was all over us. They caught us within about 5 minutes.

I high five'd one of the wooden statue Indians that you pass on that train ride around TS Island.

I wonder how they will keep me out of the park 40 years after than banning?

I got banned before the internet! :D

THIS.

I just really don't fcking get it.

I know people who "can't afford to travel" but they're at Disneyland/world with 3 fvcking kids 5 times a year for multiple days and staying at nice resorts, eating in the park, and buying plenty of booze and souvenirs. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

IMO it's practically child abuse to deprive a kid of real travel and blow it all on Disney theme parks. I know kids who go regularly and it's the only vacation they've ever been on.

Weirder is people who don't have kids but go on a regular basis as well. Adults with no kids and they're season pass holders. WTF.

As a kid I went once when I was 8, another time when I was 12. Did not see what the big deal was and the rides were lacking in intensity.

Was given free passes so went another time when I was 23 or 24 and I had horrible gas that made me gag - spent the day silently ripping the most disgusting farts in line - had people retching.:ROFLMAO: Most fun I ever had at Disney.

hahah last time i was at disneyland was in the late 80s on acid - just remember tripping on how fat people were

my 13 yr old has been around the world and still has never been to disneyland - cruel dad
