From Stab:
From an insider, we were told that the only reason Kelia’s contract was able to be terminated was because of a niggly 30-day termination clause, which stated that Boardriders could terminate her contract for any reason with only 30 days notice.
These clauses came standard in every Boardriders athlete contract, however Boardriders would generally remove them if they were asked to do so by a surfer or agent. After the mass force majeure fallout from covid, managers and agents were incredibly scrupulous about the fine print in athlete contracts, meaning many of them got the 30-day clause removed. Unfortunately, Kelia’s team did not.
“After years of fighting for fair pay and equality, there’s just no way I was signing that deal.”
