Ruh roh.....should I put this in the politics section?

Going for the annual physical in a few weeks.

Just wondering how many of you got the shingles vax? If you didn't, why not? If you did, did you have a bad reaction? I've heard almost everyone has a bad reaction. My sister was sick from work for two days, for both doses. But then I hear getting shingles is way worse. I don't know if I've had the vax. My wife swears I did. My (new) MD says I didn't. I did have shingles when I was a kid. I remember having blisters all over my back and chest. I think that actually makes me more susceptible.

Are there any other common vaccines you don't get?

I never got the flu vax until I started teaching. My first year of teaching I did not get it. I figured I haven't had the flu in decades. Then I got it twice, bad, in one year. After that I started getting it. I would still, sometimes get the flu but it would last a couple days and some years I didn't get it.

Now there's this RSV, and people over 60 are recommended to get it. I'm not hearing about people getting it (the illness or the vax) so....????

The only doctor I go to regularly is the eye doctor since my eyes suck

So yeah, I wouldn't do it. It's not good to put unnatural chemicals in your body unless absolutely necessary. I've had the same experience as you the few times i've gotten a flu shot

So painful for so long.

IT hurts on the skin. Then it hurts on the muscle and even the bones.

For 6 weeks.

I was in a state of disbelief how bad it was.

Im sensitive but I can endure high pain.

Everyone I know or hear that has gotten it deeply regrets not getting the vaccines. So I wouldn’t listen to the holistic Karen’s on this vaccine.

I'm not aware of anyone on my father's side of the family getting shingles but on my mother's side my grandfather, mother and both of my sisters have had shingles. None had it real bad but bad enough. I may get it. I just never go to the doctor though. Haven't even had a tetanus shot in about 25 years.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

At least you go to the eye doctor. I recently found out I have glaucoma. Just a drop in each eye before bed and the pressure is normal (at least in the last two years since it was diagnosed). If I never went to the doctor I would never have known anything was wrong and would slowly have gone blind.

I woke up last month and the upper 15-20% of my vision was blocked by something opaque gray. Went to get it checked, dr sent me to a retinal specialist. CT scan, MRI, all kinds of specialized eye scanner/computers, etc. Appeared I had a stroke in two arteries, other arteries appeared healthy by not as “robust” as arteries in the unaffected eye. Dr says can’t reverse damage but fortunately they can stop it from continuing into the other arteries. There was also talk about vasculitis possibly being the problem. Any way, dark glasses seem to lessen the impact on my vision and it appears the brain (the retina is part of the brain I learned) will acclimate to the vision loss and it shouldn’t be too disruptive in the future. As an aside, on one of the posters in the office there was an image of a melanoma on the retina behind the eye ball. FARK……….. look at what the possibilities are as we enter advanced years. FARK…….

I was covered in sores with shingles. I was like no. Then they gave me a couple.

They are so scared of giving RX for opiates

Now the are under medicating.

i'd highly recommend the RSV vax...was the prominent respiratory illness last winter in my area along w/ our friendly neighborhood SARS virus. RSV is primarily associated w/ babies/little kids & older people, & it will mess both populations up good. getting intubated isn't fun. intubating babies is worse.

I’m definitely getting it!! I never want shingles again.

Yes it was very young to get them. They don’t recommend the vaccine until 50 years old.

I lost all my immunity 6.5 years ago from a bone marrow transplant and a year later I was vaccinated for everything including shingles. Kaiser did it in 2 sessions one week apart and I had no ill effects. Fast forward to January and February of 2021 when I received 2 covid vaccinations. Several weeks later my blood pressure suddenly went up extremely high and stayed that way for weeks. After numerous tests, it was determined that my kidneys were failing. (Kidney biopsy is gnarly). I was given 2 separate 3-hour infusions meant to lower the RNA protein that was turning my blood into poison. My kidneys AND my blood pressure calmed down. I got COVID later (I'm considered high-risk) and it was like the flu so no more COVID shots for me.

I had a friend who had an 8 year old son die of cancer and the cancer first appeared in his eye as a vision problem. Sadly my friend himself died of some form of cancer this spring in his early 60s. He was having some gastro issues and doctor first treated it as reflux. He got suddenly worse and they did some scans and they found cancer everywhere. Two weeks later he was gone.
Had a high school classmate die of Melanoma that started in his eye at 50. He lived about two years after his diagnosis and having the eye removed.

Get one shingles shot for sure. A shingles booster? I dispute the "science". If one shot is 80+% effective and a second shot is 90% plus on top does the extra 10% matter?

Tetanus booster every 10 years? Tetanus is deadly and a horrific condition to suffer through. However, that said if you had a full primary series as a kid it is long lasting immunity at roughly 100% efficacy. So, is a booster needed? If you don't remember any boosters in the last couple of decades then yes. Easy enough.

Flu shots, depends on the strains circulating and what is in this year's concoction. I think this year's vaccine is pretty good. Last year's shot sucked.

RSV at least one shot isn't a bad idea. RSV is a nasty respiratory bug that can leave you with a cough for a very long time.

Pneumovax, for sure get at least one. Protection against 23+ strains. They don't call pneumonia old man's friend for nothing. Strep pneumo can kill you in a day or 2.

Covid boosters? Not a big fan. Numbers are way way down and deaths are way way down. Almost everyone on the planet has been exposed at this point and has at least some level of immunity. So now it's more of a cold or flu situation. Only if you have really bad medical problems would I say consider a booster.
