Kinda but surfing scores are a lot more subjective. Someone who has little experience surfing having any grasp on what surfing should be rewarded is a bigger discrepancy than a football fan feeling they were robbed because of a penalty.
There was a Brazilian transmission of the ISA games and they had Pedro Scooby and Marcelo Trekinho commentating, both professional surfers. Both absolutely convinced that the judges are out to harm the Brazilian surfers. It's crazy pathetic. Specially Scooby, what a giant douchebag.
Since John’s title in 2017 there have been only Brazilian men’s world champs. Prior Gabby’s first and Adriano’s. Italo’s gold medal. There’s been a Brazilian head judge for at least a decade. The Final Five location favors a certain Brazilian champ who has outright quit at the previous end of the season stop. WSL will give perfect scores for one huge air on a closeout but a 9.67 for the single most consequential turn in women’s competitive history.
Side bar: talked to Gregg who was at Sunset supporting Brisa. He said that turn was even more gnar in person. He said if it wasn’t in a contest no one, man or woman would’ve gone for a turn on that section. That’s a kick out or straighten out for sure.
But yeah there’s a big conspiracy against Brazilian surfing. Haha.
Edit: cause I thought of something stupid. John was fast on his way to a third world title, until his knee injury happened in Brazil. Even acts of god favor a certain flag. Jeeez.
