Why weren't you crying out when flu killed 90k last year?
You mean the 34,000 fromthe 2018/19 flu season?

Actually, comparing Covid deaths to flu deaths is a bad analogy, since thousands of people die of flu every year, and Covid is on top of that.

A better analogy would be auto accident deaths. We average about 35K deaths per year, around the same as flu, actually. Imagine if a virus caused random cars' brakes to fail, and in 3 months an additional 65,000 people died in car accidents. This nation would have a cow if that happened, not because of the original 35K deaths but of the additional ones.

If the govt reacted to those brake-related deaths by imposing a lockdown order on Americans being prohibited from driving their cars then THAT would trigger them having a cow.

I think the more similar parallel would be the AIDS virus and how the govt never even considered prohibiting people from having unprotected sex. Supposedly 700,000+ Americans have died from an otherwise "avoidable" infection.

We have seatbelt law, airbags and very strict safety laws for car manufacturers. Helmet laws, traffic laws...

People are mad about those too. Yet we make these precautions.

With covid, the only precaution we can take is social distancing.

I'm not going to bother with your AIDS metaphor, it's nonsensical.

The point is we should be honest about the fact that it is way less deadly than was thought 6-8 weeks ago

the same level of response is not warranted

you can’t expect people to take this sh!t seriously if you don’t adjust as facts adjust

They did it. They closed bathhouses in the 80s and raised awareness and education, free condoms etc....

More could have been done if Reagan gave two shits about gay people dying.
In other words, local leaders targeted their response to the highest risk groups and left everyone else alone to live their lives.

As a society we chose a compromise in response to that viral infection epidemic.

It seems to me that we need to keep DTLA and SFO and Chicago and NYC and a few other high density urban areas under strict lockdown and protect those populations from infection as best we can. And of course, prevent them from leaving their homes to make a living. Two years would probably be enough.

Seems fair to me.

If the government did nothing to stop the carnage they would be voted out and replaced with one that pledged to do their best to ensure the safety of the American people.

This is what the people want. Even now, current polls are running at 2 - 1 against opening up the economy again until it is safe to do so.

Anybody can spread CV, not everybody can spread AIDS.

Why so bad at valid comparisons.

CCP virus is not flu.

but

Deaths from a virus are deaths from a virus.

You are still under the arrogant assumption that humans are not still at the mercy of mother nature and that a bunch dead people during pandemics is a thing of the past.
