I think you're forgetting that the point was that the 50s were not peachy for everyone.
They were great if you were middle class and white. For everybody else, not so much.
You’re forgetting that I grew up in the south during the “50s”. The closest thing to a “middle class” were the Sergeants and officers stationed on the Airforce base in town. If a man had a skiff (rowboat), a cast net, or a pair of oyster tongs he could make a living no matter what color he was.
So to rectify that we strive for a race to the bottom where we all have lives like southern blacks in the 50s?
