The water is clearing out by work time.

Austin and Boise need to step up their recruiting efforts.

Maybe Trona can gentrify; they have lots of space for luxury apartments, proximity to National Parks, and an alternative potpourri-like aroma that cannot be experienced in any city! Well, maybe Houston but that's also a great place too to experience the magic!

They also have really cool halite crystals. Too bad they cancelled the harvest this year.

I love California and lived in SOCAL for five years. I consider it my second home and where I started my current career. Wife was born and raised there.

Every time I go back it is just a giant sh!t show that is crowded everywhere I go. I can only imagine how bad it is now with COVID and remote work.

There is nothing more horrible than someone who has an arsenal of both dad jokes AND geology puns at their disposal. Maybe everybody will be so nauseated, the lineups will be emptier.

Yes you can. In fact, the event is quite often a family affair. They hold it once a year, and you can show up with pic axes, shovers, pry bars, plastic bins and wrap. Really quite fun actually, especially when you find a piece you can really be proud of. You can also hit Searles Valley and other spots, but I'm sure our resident geologists can you point you better. I'm merely an explorer, constantly wandering the earth in search of nothing, to see what I can find.

Too bad Corona cancelled Trona. The event was supposed to be next week. I wanted to take a girl out there as I know she would love it.

The fun part is that you can lick the minerals to confirm it's halite. Sylvite also to a lesser degree. That's an awesome specimen, r32, - never found anything close to that there.

Other good spots are old mine tailings. Lot of cool minerals you can find.

Another good spot to go is Pala for tourmalines. Most of the stuff you'll get are garden variety but there's always the hope of something like this (obviously cut; worth $50K+):

I love it man.

I think the mineral project I had to do in 6th grade forever embedded rocks and gems into my heart of cool stuff in the world. Clearly, I should have taken more geology classes in college instead architecture, design, and business.

I started out in environmental engineering (literally picked the one school west of the Rockies that had a legit program at the time) only to transfer to geology and am pretty much doing the same thing I would have anyways with the previous major but with less math, more beer, and a lot more field trips. The exact opposite of regret.

But the seed was sown going to elementary school in Topanga where most science was geology-related. Lots of fossil hunting. Lots of hiking/bouldering during recess/lunch. I do have to say, though, that I enjoy geology more as a hobby than as a job. But I guess you could say that about a lot of things.
