then how have we managed to cooperate and organize as a society from the earliest cave clans to the biggest modern sort-of capitalist oligarchies' we have today? they are far from perfect, perfection is impossible when men have authority over one another, but the average community, when left largely alone, will self organize and cooperate for the betterment and profit of the community. Contrary to what Hollywood has been portraying for over a century, the "Wild West" was not 100 years of shoot-outs at high noon. This vast continent was settled so successfully because small hardy groups of people cooperated in setting up communities in hostile, alien, and terrifying new lands, and they did that through enlightened self-interest by means of cooperation. It wasn't some long running gun battle with the Injuns (not to say there wasn't plenty of that) but for the most part, it was basic cooperation and teamwork. So if John Farmer needed a new barn lifted, the town got together and helped him raise it. Sure, John profits from the new barn, but everyone else profits when it's THEIR turn to have a barn raised, or when they need to store a sack of seed in John's sturdy and weather-proof barn."Depicting economic history as an unstoppable evolutionary process that drives social change, the author theorizes that capitalism is the inevitable way in which human society organizes itself for survival in a world of limited resources."
Nah!
Capitalism vs Limited Resources only means few get much and many get naught.
Flawed theory to begin with, imho.

I hear a lot of Amish kids are leaving the Amish way and never coming back. Kinda sad. Seems like they might be walking away from a really good deal. If the Amish were down with some weed and whiskey a couple of times a week I'd be trying to figure out how to join 'em myself!Amish, Quakers, Mennonites... religious eccentricities aside, all very much enlightened cooperative capitalists and profit seekers. Come on man, "The Protestant Work Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism"
Guess what group was among the largest to own whaling ships? Quakers. Yup, the pacifists, "God exists in all beings" Religious Society of Friends were among the great whaling fleet owners of the northeast in the 1700's. They also bought VAST amounts of real estate all across this mighty land, and many old Quaker families are still quietly and substantially wealthy as a result. Profit driven work ethic+ nearly pathological frugality= a lot of very old and still very wealthy Quaker families all over the country (FTR I'm not one of them- any dollar I have was earned by me, not left to be by some wealthy, ultra-frugal, land-owning Quaker ancestor)
They were also among the earliest, bravest, and most vocal abolitionists. I guess my point is that you can be driven by profit motive, work ethic, pride, religious duty, whatever it is, to earn the almighty dollar, and not have to be a thief, crook, con-man, murderer, or Donald Trump in order to do so
Dem Amish folks be brewing da whiskey and growing da weed brah! Amish women figured out dey can make big bucks in Porn. No more bonnets and long dresses. Dey be going all Cardi B ~I hear a lot of Amish kids are leaving the Amish way and never coming back. Kinda sad. Seems like they might be walking away from a really good deal.
