Was driving around a bend in the southern sierra last week (early AM, 30-40 degrees depending on shade, sun, etc) and saw what looked like a fox, as I got closer, noticed it was a cat. Full on mountain lion cub just chilling on the side of the road. I grabbed my camera to take a pic but it went disappeared into the bushes down the hill. Bummer, it was super cute and looked uber healthy. First one I've seen in person up close. No mama in sight. Next day, saw a bobcat in broad daylight in a similar way. Driving along hwy 246 I saw the cat crouch in some brush so I pulled over and approached it. It did the super crouch and by the time I was about 20-30ft it spooked. Got full video, frame grab:

This great blue heron caught a stingray. The heron grabbed the ray by clamping down on it with its bill but dropped the ray repeatedly and stabbed it with its bill. I guessed the heron was tearing up the ray but wife said “nope! Heron will either swallow it whole or abandon it if too large.” Of course, she was right. It took 45 minutes but the heron swallowed the ray whole. It’s remarkable that the bird is able to choke down large food while keeping the airways open.

I've got that beat. I've got a sequence of a Herring Gull swallowing a living squirming shark whole. Be glad Herring Gulls don't get much bigger than they do.

Meanwhile the 25 inch deluge of rain drained nicely and didn’t pond up (nor lose any monkey holding trees) down on our new half acre piece of paradise. 20 dubs can supervise construction of our dream getaway in a couple of years. Flyinraptr can be my proxy vote with the HOA ;) I kid I kid!

Yesterday afternoon on my backyard fence, a new hawk showed up. Red-shouldered hawk I think.

Photo taken through a window with pocket camera on "airplane" mode to try and get better focus...not super successful at that.

PS
Seeing a fair number of Black-headed Phoebes and California Towhees to go with the usual house finch and house sparrows, and a bird with a curious dusty yellow breast that reminds me of some kind of wren (due to the body type 'plumpness'), but it could be a type of warbler. Don't know much about identifying which birds are which.
