Probably dropping in on you, California
Koa has zero personality and comes off awkward on his vlog and besides pipe, surfs pretty average by NS standards..dont think his channel has much appeal, especially to kids. Makua is Makua - hard to watch.

Brett Barley's vlog is ok at best mainly because he has a humble almost nerdy personality but its not going to take him far. His surfing is pro level obviously but nothing unique and again, no appeal to kids.

JOB is succesful because he figured out how to appeal to the kids. As an adult I think 98 percent of it is cringey AF BUT i love watching that guy surf so that keeps me coming back. The kids eat that sh!t up and thats basically your prime demographic on the tube.

The best one is a tie tween Mason Ho because its 100 percent surfing and sick surfing at that and Nathan Florence because hes funny and i like the un edited raw clip or POv approach.

None of these are well edited w/ the exception of M Ho because its just surf clips but the guys who do a day in the life type thing really need someone besides the filmers or themselves to craft the "story" a bit better and i think thats a big reason we wont see people my age getting into them - way too much fluff. No reason one of these should be close to 20 minutes long with "hey im making my coffee again", heres the airplane taking off shot etc. Just give us the goods!

Views are down even with the covid surfer influx? Sure it's not just typical winter slowdown ?
Pull up any vloggers channel and look back to to previous videos to see views.
Koa's definitely down, JOB is down but still gets some monster views.
Nathan's is down. Eli's is down. I think only Mason's is steady.
I think it's just saturation, lots of surf vloggers out there these days.

Didn't Makua try to sell himself as the Fresh Prince of Hawaii or something like that a few years back?

My friend saw him in Lake Tahoe after one of his shows where he opened for a bigger well known band.

He was walking around in a papale hat, huge puka shell necklace (complete with sunrise shell of course), and his ukulele.

He was trying to play blackjack and the dealers kept telling him he can’t play his ukulele at the table.

He had his entire crew of nut huggers with him following him through the casino.

Seems like vloggers these days are best viewed by under 18 yr olds.
Case in point, my kids love watching these gamer vlogs, and other crazy similar vlogs. These guys are making some real $$!
Annoying as fckkk, some funny as all hell, and most mildly inappropriate for my kids 9yrs/8 yrs.
They don't surf, but I can't see them watching surfer vlogs much even if they did.

imo, JOB and Mason, and even Ben Gravytrain, are about as good as the surf industry is going to get. Those guys are a bit crazy, do funny sh!t, and can surf.
I'd much rather watch HMC on reddit than these guys though :ROFLMAO: now that's some funny chit!!

How much money do some of these guys make from the Vlogs? It has to be enough to pay someone to film them while surfing, or talking about going surfing.

I've enjoyed Brett Barley more than others. Mostly for it's not too far from my home and kind of cool remembering whatever weather system the swell he's riding came from and comparing it to here, or just watching the Outer Banks go off. I usually tune out when he tries to get all deep about things.

I started watching Koa for a little bit but as others said, got pretty stale fast.

Never been able to take much of Ben Gravy or J.O.B., too much "Nuking" or "Staying Pysked" for the camera.

Not sure I'd call Mason's channel a Vlog, although it may technically be. Either way it's the best surf related thing on Youtube!

Kind of enjoy Leo's, Nate's and a little bit of Koa Smith's stuff.

You've got to give it to some of these guys though. In a tough sponsorship environment they have found a way to milk their career a little longer with this self made exposure.

Oh didn't now nathan Florence had one too.
Gonna check that one out.

are kids even into surfing anymore?? I know kids who live near the coast have no option. But inland kids seem to have moved onto other things. Didn't i read somewhere surfing was aging???

I think the most popular channels are doing well, ben gravy is clearly making good money. But other than those few channels, I bet not. I found this website that tracks views over time then estimates YouTube only revenue:

I watch channels to see what spots did what on swells. These guys are ridiculous about blowing up spots.

I feel like I can see the worry in Ben Gravy in recent things he does. He's got that "fvvk, I need to find a job" vibe.

Edit: just for fun compared a few quick YouTube channels... the most popular surf vlogs are significantly less popular than any videos of random kids reviewing makeup, and not in the same universe as the amount of views Jack Black gets for screaming at video game screens.
YouTube is basically becoming one big infomercial where YouTubers say only positive things about brands that sponsor them. I think they've demonetized a lot of the other stuff.

I liked Billy Mays a lot better. Back in the day, you'd watch him and by the end, you'd be dialing your cordless phone and not knowing why.
