Removing sponsorship, commercialism, from surfing seems...unlikely.
What if we went back to kicking people's asses if they did that shlt, pro or not?
I'd bet if the guy getting burned by JOB broke his nose for the trouble, JOB would be less likely to act that way.
I think it might go back to the way it was before the boom in the late '80s and '90s if the Tour survives: the pay is low and it's something you do in your early '20s. Dane said being a pro surfer isn't really a thing anymore. The bust of Quik was a sign of the times.

Anyways I always thought the peak of the pro surfer VLOG was Marine Layer/Dane/Mini with much shorter, better-edited clips and minimal lifestyle. Dane is very likable but just surfed rather than VLOGged. Not sure how the Quik C-Suite managed to drive the Dane/Kelly thing into a ditch. Pretty impressive controlled flight into terrain (CFIT).

I just think pro surfers have it in their mind that they are working, you are a kook, and if the wave is good enough, they're going. Again, there are exceptional individuals and exceptional circumstances but pretty much that seems like the game.
Well, think about it this way:

They surf at a level that is superhuman when compared to the rest of us. So the majority of waves they see to some degree seem wasted.

I'm just a decent surfer but it's tough to watch guys wasting waves.

But I'm sure you've been in a similar situation.

I watched it happen all fckin day long today at a crowded spot.
Despite surfing better than the majority of people in the water I played nice guy.
Pulled back twice when I shoulda gone despite knowing they were gonna blow it.
Maintained good etiquette through the entire session.
End result - One wave in two hours.
As I was riding a tiny wave in on my belly some kook took off in the whitewater inside of me and yelled at me.
That's what playing by the rules gets you at a lot of spots.

We'd all play the game the same way as the pros if we could. To top it off they are trying to put food on the table by surfing.

It sucks but that's how it goes.

When's the last time you think he was a pro though? Like got a check? Early 2000's probably? That's nearly 20 years ago.

I’d agree. Early 2000s.

Whatever happened to Roy Powers? I remember him from mid 2000s?

Kala managed to keep himself paid too. Surprisingly. Would have thought he’d found a way to blow it

For a post pro surfing way to keep getting paid? Start a "Foundation" or a "Non Profit" and make yourself an "Officer" of said non profit or foundation. As in many "foundations" and "non profits", most of the funds taken in are used to pay "administrative" fees. such as salaries, etc.
Examples? A foundation such as Mauli Ola Foundation, or a non profit such as Hui O He'e Nalu.

there are so many average surfers who can catch waves it has made catching waves at a normal break very hard bc everyone in the water is capable

You'd have to be pretty short-sighted and/or have a big financial safety net to think pro surfing will set you up for life. But if wave pools make it marketable and watchable, it may be a more viable career path than it is now. The number of sponsored brobrahs with no Plan B is probably good news for the unskilled labor pool.

like golf pros.

The 158th ranked golfer on the United States PGA tour IN TOUR PURSE WINNINGS ONLY made just over $100K this year so far. By the end of the season somewhere around the 225th ranked golfer will have clipped the $100k mark while the previous mentioned 158th ranked golfer will be around $500k in winnings..

You can't compare golf and surfing. Golf is for rich and successful people. Surfing is for broke idiots with no future.

Wave of the winter?

LOL

How delusional is he?

The guy he burned maybe would've had the wave of the winter if he hadn't been forced to straighten out.

DEA informant.
Probably.

This is a huge racket in CA. Housing is one of the biggest ones. Big corporations will even donate money to these and have no idea how it's spent. It's a friend of a friend thing.

At beach breaks the best guys tend to get a lot more waves than the average surfers. They position better, have better paddle power, and sit deeper on peak. I remember surfing Northside HB pier next to Timmy Reyes back when he was still on tour. He told a friend he'd already gotten 24 waves when he paddled out later than me and I only had half a dozen.
