Those look great. I've never seen backyard ones get that big

Good job
It's Fuerte that gets gigante. You don't see it in shops here for some reason, only Haas.

I had to get two different gender trees to cross pollinate.

Hope one of them doesn't decide to change. :smile2:
:dancing:

I want to say that Haas became the most popular because they ship well? I am probably wrong though
From what I remember, the Haas avocado was the result serendipity. And his kids liked the taste of it better than the others in the test plot.

Shipping can't be ignored, however, most alligator pears are picked before they are 'ripe" and allowed to ripen off the tree...so pick 'em so that they are ready to eat in about 7+ days for best yummy taste.

And yeah, different types of avocados, how long they've been hanging on the tree, weather, etc etc will change that 7 day period.

All this reminds me, there are about 4 'wild' avocado trees in SF, I need to see how they are progressing for my crop.

:roflmao:

wait, which genders did you choose?

And here I thought my avocado tree was a hermaphrodite.

How do I sex it properly?
There's A and B type.

If you have only one and it's not producing fruit, that's why.

Unless there's an opposite gender tree within a mile or so, in your neighborhood.

Or so I've been told. :dancing:
The A and B type classification is more about the blooming timing of the flowers than purely meaning 'I have a boy avocado tree and you have a girl avocado tree, lets introduce them so we can eat their offspring."

But easier to say boy/girl and plant according to one's needs.

So what you’re saying they’re gender neutral? :tongue2:

I noticed that they don’t flower at the same time, which is confusing.

So how do they cross pollinate?

Hass takes at least two weeks to ripen after picking.
They never ripen on the tree, which is great because you pick only as many as you need.

I’ve never realized that before I planted trees because TJ avos take only 3 days to ripen. :roflmao:
