Never been more spooked than out by myself at tarantulas. Deep dark water, and then the fog rolls in so you can't even see the beach anymore... you can practically hear the Jaws soundtrack playing.

oooold school!
gosh, i read + re~read that book, so many times when it came out,
then, saw thee movie, on big screen, in a drive~in, yikes!!!

"There is a Creature, alive today, who has survived millions of yearz of Evolution,
with~out change, with~out passion, + with~out logic,
it livez to KILL, a mind~less eating machine":
"It will attack, + devour, anything,
it is as if God, created The Devil".

Boyz + Girlz:
IT, It, it ~ it'z gonna get ya!
:shark:

:waving:

ps ~ add-in:
i'd bethca that your large White Shark is prego, gonna drop off her lil' 1's,
they can then eat allll them f**kin' sting~rayz, near shore, that ya might have stepped upon...
but hey, if you be worried, go rent some waves at Ke11y'z wave~pool, like some L.A. surfers that i know, recently done did!

^^^
sad,
in my humble opinion...
for that shark is soooo acclimated to dealin ' with surfers,
it does not want to eat you, nor your buddies, dig?!?

if it did,
pep'z out surfin', swimmin', divin' would have already been mauled, eatin', alive,
in Santa Barbara, this month, which some~times is called "Shark~Tober"

i also hate it when dudes grab thee biggest of lobsterz,
for they be the breeders of their species, also...

any~one who luvs fresh fish + lobster,
knowz that it is the young, barely legal flesh,
that is thee most succulent, and worm free, right?
hmmm...

Thee Fear,
is allll in your mind, boyz...

any of ya,
you ever have a large shark, of any species, come at~cha whilst surfin'?
if not, then what ya be afraid of?
Holywood?
hmmmm...

here, below, is "Spot",
seen swimmin' in thee loc' waterz off Los Angeles, 8 yearz ago ~ {2013}:
"Spot" should be an adult by now!
wa~ga!!!

i hope that he, or she,
this animal, an apex preditor,
whom lives 24 hourz a day, 7 dayz a week, out there,
is still alive, nourishin' it'z body by eatin',
+ it is by now: F**Kin' + Reproducin',
yow~za!!!

i am sorry, boyz,
if your opinion, is ah, well different then mine,
oh well...

but this, all said, err typed,
well i really want ya to go + surf, kidz,
for they, they really don't want to eat you.
for if they did, they would sure~ly tell allll their friendz how gooood you taste,
how easy it is to hunt ya, so as their buddies can then go, + get~cha, too,
hahaha...

Exactly how reliable is the data from these previous decades - the 1980s for instance?

I'm guessing tagging, tracking, and observation has become a heck of a lot more widespread over the past decade or two than it was in 1980.
There's no tagging/tracking data in that graph. Commercial fisherman have to report landings and that shouldn't be difficult for a guy like him to obtain, plus access to pretty much any research from 1980 to when he did his own research. The graph above doesn't even include drift nets, draggers, etc. We've also literally watched the juvenile population explode in our backyards from SB to SD.
