Looks maybe a notch above average: You obviously haven’t been to any truly great sandwich spots. At least half of the Jewish delis in NYC would blow that sandwich out of the water.
There isn't a great sandwich (or pizza) in the whole state of California.

NY...and even Connecticut and New Jersey great sandwiches are everywhere.

Sal Kris and Charlies in Queens may be the best in the world.

As far as pizza goes, thats a fact...the question is WHY???

I eat a lot of pizza (prob 2x/week) both in the USA and internationally. When traveling I always search out local pizza restaurants as a top dining priority.

Maybe 1 in 10 pizzas in CA qualify as good-great.

There are 4 pizza restaurants within 3 miles of my house...and pathetic Domino's makes the best out of all of them. WTF?

Why is it even places like Montana can churn out great pizza (Bridge Pizza in Missoula) or best pizza in your life (?) quality (North Fork Pizza in Columbia Falls) but CA cannot?

Ike's up here in SR is pretty damn good. Although it's a travesty they're named after Giants players.

Probably a cultural thing. California is more "cuisine" and health focused, hence why it's easy to find good salads, sushi, farm-to-table, vegetarian, etc. East coast and midwest is more takeout focused, therefore better sandwiches, pizzas, wings, etc. Not hard to do well when the handful of competitors in your area are also crap. The only takeout that is consistently better in California is Mexican.

Could also be water quality. Dough is roughly 1/3 water. Most California water is awful quality with high pH and carbonates. Crap water makes crap dough. A sandwich or pizza is only as good as the bread or dough it's cooked with, and I will die on that hill.

The place inside the post office in San Simeon used to be legendary. Like eating a legit NYC hoagie. Super long line and wait, but it was worth it so you'd make an afternoon of it.

Then it got bought by a marginal local restaurant that cheaped out on all the local artisan suppliers that provided all the ingredients, and went with bottom of the line Cisco/Costco crap. No longer a line and proceeded to get hammered on yelp. Don't think it's even open now :roflmao:

and if this restaurant is so bad, why are there lines down the street for it?

it’s all about the garlic spread and fresh bread

There was a great pizza place in Marina del Rey...but then the owner moved back to Napoli.

Am I the only one here who loves donuts? I used to get them once a week on weekends after surfing. Now I'm down to once a month, but apple fritters are good, bear claws are good, maple bars are good.:jamon:
the old owners of Best Donuts sold to new owners and now the place is run by three pretty chinese ladies

I've gained 10 pounds

Of course, but you said best in the world, not best in "Cali".

I'm not saying it's bad. Just doesn't look world class. As for the line, it's all relative to what you have around you.

You are getting slightly better than the last with this photo, but basically looks like a minimal upgrade from Jersey Mikes :roflmao:
