I think the most popular channels are doing well, ben gravy is clearly making good money. But other than those few channels, I bet not. I found this website that tracks views over time then estimates YouTube only revenue:

I watch channels to see what spots did what on swells. These guys are ridiculous about blowing up spots.
Not as much money in it as I thought. Beats roofing I guess.

You have to wonder what the future holds for these pros. They clearly don't make enough to sustain themselves all the way through their working years and then retirement. It must be hard to go from surfing good waves all day everyday to a working stiff.

What's laughable is all the talk about respect, blah, blah, when people come to the north shore. Then they travel to Indo and do this to my friend out in front of his place:
I've encountered many a 6-10+ surfer entourage from many different locales while traveling. The same type of guys who bitch about crowds and how you shouldn't show up to a break with friends in tow.

Always, a sad comment on human nature.

I never traveled to surf.

At this point I’m convinced if I did I’d be more frustrated then anything

best part is my friend's tool shirt
It happens here too. The entire men's and women's world tour is practicing at Sunset during every minute of daylight right now, and with a few exceptions, they are not polite visitors. I just think pro surfers have it in their mind that they are working, you are a kook, and if the wave is good enough, they're going. Again, there are exceptional individuals and exceptional circumstances but pretty much that seems like the game.

Your friend should have grabbed him by hips and started going to town while they get rolled by the wave. That'd show him.

What's even worse is all these little groms that think they will be on tour are starting to emulate this behavior. Just straight up burning people without a second thought. And most of the ones that I see do it are terrible surfers but mom and dad tell them they're special.

But surfers keep buying quikabong t shirts, and watching the tour, supporting these people.

I think it would help a lot if you couldn't go pro/get sponsored. People wouldn't be so aggressive, and a lot of people would lose interest altogether. Wouldn't solve the problem by any stretch, but a big help.

No worries, your tax dollars will be there to support them. Know plenty of surfers who have intentionally turned down jobs and gone on unemployment..

Removing sponsorship, commercialism, from surfing seems...unlikely.
What if we went back to kicking people's asses if they did that shlt, pro or not?
I'd bet if the guy getting burned by JOB broke his nose for the trouble, JOB would be less likely to act that way.
If it was at JOB's local, it would take a remarkably brave or stupid individual to pop him one right in the schnozz.

OTOH if JOB was traveling and burned someone at THEIR local and he gets cracked, then lesson learned.

Koa has zero personality and comes off awkward on his vlog and besides pipe, surfs pretty average by NS standards..dont think his channel has much appeal, especially to kids. Makua is Makua - hard to watch.

Brett Barley's vlog is ok at best mainly because he has a humble almost nerdy personality but its not going to take him far. His surfing is pro level obviously but nothing unique and again, no appeal to kids.

JOB is succesful because he figured out how to appeal to the kids. As an adult I think 98 percent of it is cringey AF BUT i love watching that guy surf so that keeps me coming back. The kids eat that sh!t up and thats basically your prime demographic on the tube.

The best one is a tie tween Mason Ho because its 100 percent surfing and sick surfing at that and Nathan Florence because hes funny and i like the un edited raw clip or POv approach.

None of these are well edited w/ the exception of M Ho because its just surf clips but the guys who do a day in the life type thing really need someone besides the filmers or themselves to craft the "story" a bit better and i think thats a big reason we wont see people my age getting into them - way too much fluff. No reason one of these should be close to 20 minutes long with "hey im making my coffee again", heres the airplane taking off shot etc. Just give us the goods!
You telling me you haven't ordered your STAY PSYCHED merch yet?
