Actually, comparing Covid deaths to flu deaths is a bad analogy, since thousands of people die of flu every year, and Covid is on top of that.
A better analogy would be auto accident deaths. We average about 35K deaths per year, around the same as flu, actually. Imagine if a virus caused random cars' brakes to fail, and in 3 months an additional 65,000 people died in car accidents. This nation would have a cow if that happened, not because of the original 35K deaths but of the additional ones.
