If we had to depend a lot more on Middle East oil, the stock market would've tanked big, and oil prices would've shot up even higher than they did today.

Credit our use of our own sources in the USA for this lack of a hit to the markets/economy.

As mentioned, we are now a net exporter, which hasn't been the case in many decades prior.

We don't need no stinking towel head oil.:p

and if we continued to develop alternate energy sources we could continue to drive
national energy independence AND erode the influence of these boy-fuckers.

Unfortunately, the Euro's and rest of the 3rd world (including "supposed" 3rd world China) depend on the Middle East still for oil.

Destabilizing their economies is not good for the USA, either. If they had their own sources, most of the world would tell them to f off.

Or we can reduce our use of plastic? Thinking plastics are the future is such a dated concept...

Plastics are destroying the world.
I agree completely.

Plastics are the eventual death of our planet.

But the world is hooked on it like crack-whores. Our throw-away society will come back to haunt us in the not too distant future, if it already hasn't started.

Yet here you are dismissing solar and wind cause they can't produce plastic?

So is the US really going to go to war again?

This is why smart people had a bad feeling when trump won, and the minions said, What?

I like glass, paper and aluminum.

Bring back the good old days!
Ya, those are the better alternatives, but very energy intensive to produce. Can't make glass, paper and aluminum from solar/wind electric power. The levels of heat needed to produce those go well beyond plugging your Tesla into a 220 outlet.

Why does everything have to be so all or nothing with you?

Durable plastics are a direct product of oil.

As I mentioned above, old school materials are better (glass, aluminum, paper), but still very energy intensive to produce from their raw forms.

paper/cardboard need trees for the most part (although there are more expensive alternatives).

Amazon and the public's ferver for single item boxes shipped to their front door aren't helping the environment either.

What happened to shopping a big store where you can get everything you want in one place without all the little single item cardboard boxes shipped by the millions each and every day?

We're going backwards environmentally and no one seems to care or notice. But global warming is going to kill us all in 11 years.

We're going to need oil based products for a HELL of long time, even if we go all electric in vehicles the next 10 years.

People won't go backwards with their fad gadgets and plastic is what makes them.

Recycling is good too.

But that is liberal Communism
Hey, I recycle everything possible. Most times my blue recycle bin is way more full than my trash bin. Sometimes I even skip a week putting out my small trash bin, but put my blue bin out most every week.

I also take recyclable metals and such to the local all purpose recycler. Used to do newspapers, but they got picky with the glossy print ads and those needed to be separated and discarded (China doesn't take those either now). So it was more hassle than it was worth.

The problem lately, is that China is no longer taking many of our recyclables because they're too "dirty" to reprocess economically. Too many people here just throw dirty plastic and cans into bins without at least a minimum of rinsing out. Too much work and hassle for most. So, now China is no longer taking it. And in increasing more and more cities in the USA, most all the once recycled bottles and cans END UP IN LANDFILLS ANYWAY.

What a farce, waste and scam that they still continue to collect deposits on these plastic bottles, yet they still end up in landfills anyway, because it's not cost effective to recycle them here in the USA. Such a jacked up "feel good" farce this has ended up as. But what's new with the "good intentioned" enviro-socialists. As long as it's out of sight, out of mind, the average enviro-do-gooder doesn't really give a fook.
