I've gone over the medical insurance increases those 3-4 years here before and don't need to do it again. But to condense.....

We paid what we thought was outrageous at the time $300 a month for a Platinum type COBRA insurance plan (similar to Cal state gov plans, I found after investigating) in 2013. When I shopped around for what I thought was way expensive COBRA then, I found that we were getting a deal compared to even Gold and high end Silver plans if paid direct. My boss was now paying for this, as he knew he skated for quite a few years as my wife had cheaper coverage for both of us with her employer.

So, we kept the COBRA plan the full 18 months, until it expired. From there on we paid more than double that for a decent Silver plan thru Blue Cross. Then it went up another $500 the next year ($1200 at start of 2015), then another $300 the following year (2016). I cancelled BC when they wanted $1500 a month for a basic Silver plan for Jan 2017. Went with Sharp Health and paid $1000 for a HMO type Silver plan (Jan 2017). It went up $200 for this year.

Doubt me all you want, but look up premiums on Covered Cal's website and plug in an age for 2 people in their mid-late 50's and prepare to be floored (if you don't meet lower income subsidies). We do OK, but far from rich by So Cal standards.

Wife was laid off during Obama, if that matters, and has had a hard time getting a similar well paying, full time, permanent employ since. She finally got a new permanent hire job, but it's part time and much less than she was making prior to 2012. She's been working temp a few times (3-6+ month stints), but because of our ages, employers, at that time (and still), would rather hire temps and not pay enormous insurance premiums that have doubled and tripled from 2012 to 2016. One employer dragged out her temp position for 1-1/2 years, just so they didn't have to pay high medical insurance premiums and other benny's.

Obamacare was a huge anchor dragging on what should've been a booming economy. 1% GDP was the new "take it and like it" "normal" from late 2014 to the end of the 2016. Trump's new less restrictive policies will prove that "new normal" 1-2% GDP a floundering failure of Obama's burdensome economic policies.

A business park near me is building and filling in large lots that have been sitting empty for 10-12 years. I haven't seen this much commercial building since the early 2000's.
