Had we not done that, Germany would have conquered Western Europe and would've been able to direct its resources to hold off the USSR on the eastern front, and we would have had to make peace with a unified Europe that was hostile to us. We would have not enjoyed the great growth of wealth that we enjoyed in the postwar 50s and 60s and would certainly not have ended up as rich, secure, and comfortable as we are today.

USSR would have defeated Germany either way, and we would have still been unhurt at home. It just would’ve taken longer, and in fact probably hurt both sides more, which in turn would’ve been more of a net positive for us
we still would’ve have fought Japan and fired up our manufacturing base
