First they hacked into FireEye, a company in Texas who builds software for identifying security vulnerabilities in network systems with clients that include the US gov.
Then they used that software to help infiltrate SolarWinds, a network company with 300,000+ clients including most Fortune 500 companies and organizations, and fed gov entities as well.
They broke into a range of key government networks, including in the Treasury and Commerce Departments, and had free access to their email systems, for months. FireEye’s clients, including the Department of Homeland Security and intelligence agencies.
