Meet Bob.

Bob is apparently 14 years old now and has no teeth so not doing well and is reported to be really skinny these days.
Bob hangs out around Youbou, on SW Vancouver Island where everyone knows him and he mooches treats and stuff.

His rack is not very big so he's not been doing well for a bit of time now, but he keeps hanging around and seems fine with people.

Take care.

Brian Rundle from the Sooke area likes these California Quail and takes neat photos of them.
Here's a couple in the snow.

Bet the little buggers wish they were elsewhere right now. LOL

And here's a little Golden Crown Sparrow in the cold.

Take care.

sad that the two remaining are mother/daughter. the male already died a few years ago. scientists froze his sperm and are hoping someone figures out artificial insemination in rhinos. but even if they're successful, after one generation, then what? extinction is forever.
They can do it. They have DNA. Group already working on bringing back the man-caused extinct Dodo bird, Wooly Mammoth, and Tasmanian Tiger. Nothing like a bunch of humans trying to fix ecosystem they fucked up, only to fuck it up further. I excited.

Cloning doesn't exactly solve the genetic bottleneck problem. I did a workshop w/ another teacher who was a vet in an earlier life. We surfed after the workshop, and I got to know him better. He spends his summers in Africa volunteering to help the cheetah. He said they're so inbred now b/c of the small population, that they're having a bunch of health issues. Sad.

Take home message:
Don't reproduce w/ your relatives!

On our hike this AM.
These Ceonopsis which are all over the hillsides here have been tricked into thinking its spring with the epic run of beautiful weather we've been having for the past 10 days and are in full bloom. They are literally buzzing with bees.
Things are about to change back to more normal soon though.
