But if you think about it, we succeeded in rebuilding Japan after WWII, governing it for a while before handing sovereignty back to its people. I think that was the same objective for Afghanistan, had it not been for one administration’s lack of focus.
What an erroneus objective. It essentially would amount to wiping a religion or philospohy accepted by a large number of people from the face of the earth.

And comparing the Taliban with the Japanese is laughable, at best.

What does not the average American understand? The people in that part of the word are tribal savages, based on being tribal savages for thousands of years.

What we do will never change them! They will only return to what they know...oppress and kill.

Unless we call it quits, the only way to solve the problem is to kill them all and hopefully the next generation will be up to post cave man rational thinking.

Drop the big one!

Yes - but we are capable of wiping them all out with a few quick pushes of a button.

That or just leave and call it quits, but that will never happen because of the $$$.

How do you propose speaking to people that do not recognize women as humans and burn schools to the ground?

Spent some time in that part of the world post 9/11, average people are great, but the f-cks in charge......

Just the way I see it...nothing we do will change the culture of the land. Those beliefs have been embedded forever. At best they will go away and hide or wait until we leave - ala the Taliban and Al-Sadr in Iraq. Just wait until we leave Iraq and that guy comes back from his Iranian sabbatical.

We should never have lingered there in the first place. Go in, grab Bin Laden and his cronies, stick their heads on the flagpoles outside the UN, and be done with it all. But no... we had to reenact Manifest Destiny, Lebensraum, whatever you want to call it.

Bush logic. What do you think the Bush Administration was trying to do in Iraq? C’mon, how many years has this been drummed into your head? How volatile have the separate religions and cultures there been held back from sectarian violence? It wasn’t intentional to the idiots in government, but they inadvertently destroyed a sovereign nation and allowed religious and philosophical chaos to push Iraq into a black hole of Islam vs. the west. Bush’s speeches on Iraq were filled with comparisons to the Greatest Generation and the fight against tyranny.

In my opinion, Afghanistan’s original plan had less to do with changing an entire society than going after a corrupt, oppressive government who harbored terrorists. The objective was to rid the country of them and give the Afghani people a choice on how they’d want to govern their country, while spending the money to help rebuild that nation (after how many years of strife?). The cynic in me would think it was more to A.) show the Russians that we succeeded in a place they got their asses handed to them and B.) show China our military was prepared and well-trained to fight.

And then it failed because the ideas, ideologies and objectives changed. No war in Iraq.

But I know where you’re coming from in not wanting to be anywhere near there period. I think we all agree on that. However, politics trumps everything else and makes for topics we can debate, or argue.

I need to friggin’ surf.

Is he adding or sending troops - how many U.S. soldiers will be leaving Afganistan in Spring and Summer?
None. Pakistan will be next.
It's not like ding dong ditching your neighbor these days man. There's logistics and politics and media man.

The US has 30,000 troops in Afghanistan.

During Spring and Summer, 17,000 U.S. troops will be deployed (D for deployed).

During Spring and Summer, X amount of U.S. troops will come home from active duty (X for home).

D + 30,000 – X = the number of troops that will be in Afghanistan during Spring and Summer. It will be either greater than or less than 30,000.

What is X?
My guess is greater. The number of new deployments is expected to rise above 17,000 according to the Huffington Post. Then again I could be wrong.

So, the anti-Obama crowd is mad because they thought his "change" meant he was going to "raise the white flag of surrender" and "cut and run" but Obama's "change" really meant refocusing efforts on Afghanistan which everyone was rah rah and excited about on Sept 12th, 2001, but now Afghanistan is considered a big waste of time and money?

Years too late.. Bush had an 80%+ approval rating after 9/11. If he'd taken care of business and not been horribly sidetracked, he'd be beloved and not bemoaned.

" So I don't know where he is. You know, I just don't spend that much time on him, Kelly, to be honest with you. I'm more worried about making sure that our soldiers are well-supplied; that the strategy is clear; that the coalition is strong; that when we find enemy bunched up like we did in Shahikot Mountains, that the military has all the support it needs to go in and do the job, which they did."

Yeah well the people shouldn't complain about his Afghanistan build up because that's what he said he was going to do. What people should have done was complain about is promise to send in more troops. What are we doing there? Taliban? What Taliban. The only thing we are doing there is keeping the opium trade proped up. Believe that. Oh and keeping the pipeline plan in affect. They have let no many Taliban go over the last 8 years it's sickening. Do some research. It's all there if you have the balls to find it.

Now here is where we should be screaming about Obama.

I'm disappointed by any military escalation, if that's what's going on. I'm not a sucker. Obama/Biden vs. McCain/Palin. That was our choice.
