Putting the cart before the horse. We have no Lithium refiners in the US. It would have to be shipped out of country for refining and brought back in. Tesla might be the first refinery along the gulf coast of Texas. It's a long way from reality with many uncertainties. Kind of like our collective pie-in-the sky narrative that the conversion from fossil fuels to electric is happening. Fossil fuels will be here for much longer than anyone cares to admit. Many are pulling back from the EV manufacturing commitment. It's a long ways off. Even if we start planning for it today.

"Imperial Valley Is the Saudi Arabia of lithium.” -Newsome

Controlled Thermal Resources, EnergySource and Berkshire Hathaway Renewables, are testing or scaling up pilot technologies at the Salton Sea, running the gauntlet of environmental approvals and permits, and seeking billions of dollars in private and public funding for construction of up to half a dozen facilities in the next decade.

Gov. Newsom on Friday proposed major grants, loans and infrastructure funds to help developers and county officials speed up pilot tests, approvals and construction, and to educate a skilled workforce and build vital transmission lines.

We're working on a couple of projects out there. It's a long way from becoming reality but if/when it does come to fruition, it will change the Imperial Valley forever.
Cal Energy has been running geothermal plants out there for a long time, the brine they pull up and flash to steam is nasty stuff. We're just starting the design of systems to pump spent brine that leaches from the retention ponds and collects in "monitoring" wells back the ponds. The stuff eats everything but thermoplastics and high alloy metals. We left money on the table on this one..... :bricks:

how green of him. and just think it only requires 500,000 liters of water(and wastewater) to mine 1 ton of lithium.

keeping it surf related thats only 17,241 29l shortborts.

The solution is still small nukes for the foreseeable future. That’s for the masses. Some will go alternative/cogen but as we both know that’s a small drop in the bucket in the big picture. Of those that are not willing or able to modify their lifestyles, that’s the group that has the most to say. This specifically is directed to californianos.

That may not be too farfetched.
The CCP is mineral hungry and Newson is the perfect agent (grifter) to funnel that lithium across the Pacific to feed their need for battery material. They are like locusts chewing up every thing in sight and moving on.
I wouldn't be shocked if Newson was in fact cutting them a deal to provide x tonnage of lithium/yr once they get things ramped up.
Water is a big question... There's tons of it beneath the Salton Sea but it is obviously pretty briny. It's going to take some big treatment plants to desalt all of the water necessary to process the lithium and other valuable metals in the mix.
Regardless, this is a big thing for the Imperial Valley and that County deserves a break.

So what happens in a decade or two when sodium-ion or iron-oxide batteries surpass lithium? Or should we stop investing in all those fancy new technologies now because we found all this lithium?

Doesn’t pencil out long term.

Or maybe they'll just move the whole thing to San Francisco? :dancing:
:roflmao:NIMBY! We're San Fran, we use energy...a sh*t ton of it! But produce energy here, are you craze? That goes against our whole ethos!

We need a white Rasta 1% hipster crying as he surveys the trailer park trash of Imperial County driving up 5 in their new Cybertrucks otw to newly bought properties in Pacific Heights to get the point across....stop it we're California!

Well put.

The funny thing is everyone in the renewables biz knows this is the truth but few are willing to admit it publicly.

Their biggest moneymaking resource (especially for the many that are also involved in fossils <gasp!>) is people like over in the politics forum who actually think we're on the cusp of a renewables revolution and love anything that makes FFs more difficult to acquire...not only do they mean big contracts for the renewables biz but they simultaneously will drive up oil prices.

They literally think a battery miracle is around the corner.

developing the resource is going to take cash and lots of it. who better to cut an investment deal with than the ccp?

Even if we could make the batteries, we don't have the copper to wire them nor the power to charge them. This pipe dream is coming to an end and - as Kawika said - mfrs are pulling back from their EV commitments.

I will never own an ev car.

Fvck these morans!
Seems pretty closed minded coming from someone who can’t even spell “Moron“.

Have you driven an EV? Do you travel a lot or work in an industry where you need the flexibility of fuel convenience, range, and/ or heavy duty applications? If the answers are all no, I’m shocked an electric vehicle isn’t on your radar for tooling around town and down to the beach for a surf.

I will likely never own a combustion engine vehicle for battling around town ever again, and that has nothing to do with trying to be green, they just work better for stop and go. The full size truck (V6 Turbo about 16-18 mpg) is for travel and when I need the capacity.

A younger me, now in this age with a single vehicle, would surely own a small fuel efficient gas powered truck, so I will never support an all EV plan, it needs to be a mix, but to say “I will never own an EV” is kinda kooky.

South coast OR
China is busy cornering the market on everything EV.

They know the IPCC runs the New World Equity and they will see to it that they own us and everyone mandating EV's.
