Is it racist to dress up in blackface for Halloween?

Black face is fine if you go to a party with a bunch of white people and you don't post your stupid pictures on instagram.

Why do people have to ruin EVERYTHING!

If you are an adult and you dress up for halloween, I'm guess you were a victim of an inconsistent caregiver as a child.

Halloween is for kids.

I was making fun of an adult friend who dressed up and she said, well, you used to dress up.

Me: Yeah, I was 7 years old!

Where's Q-Surf?

I need to talk to him about this important topic! :monkey:

It’s not a good idea but doing so doesn’t necessarily make you a racist.

I train with people of a lot of different races and backgrounds and we make disparaging racially based jokes to each other all the time.

But none of us are racist because of it.

Is Ted Danson racist? I doubt it....

Taboo humor is a target of the Gotcha these days.

It's digital cameras and the internet.

Focus on the relevant patterns, my N-words.

It's probably not racist today, but it is insensitive if you have even a basic understanding of how blackface became a thing.

It wouldn't seem that hard to me to just stay away from this sort of thing, but ever year someone new seems to step in it.

https://nmaahc.si.edu/blog-post/blackface-birth-american-stereotype

"The first minstrel shows were performed in 1830s New York by white performers with blackened faces (most used burnt cork or shoe polish) and tattered clothing who imitated and mimicked enslaved Africans on Southern plantations. These performances characterized blacks as lazy, ignorant, superstitious, hypersexual, and prone to thievery and cowardice. Thomas Dartmouth Rice, known as the “Father of Minstrelsy,” developed the first popularly known blackface character, “Jim Crow” in 1830. By 1845, the popularity of the minstrel had spawned an entertainment subindustry, manufacturing songs and sheet music, makeup, costumes, as well as a ready-set of stereotypes upon which to build new performances."

Shooting sh!t with your friends is not the same as painting a minstrel face for the entire world to see.

It doesn't strike me as a joke and if it is, it's not funny.

I don't think it's racist but it's insensitive at the very least.

Feelings do matter.

Whoopi sat on his face?

And now you know how The View (and The Chew for that matter) got its name.

I don’t know if a lot of people really are aware of the historical cultural significance of black face. Without that context, it doesn’t seem like a racist issue. And I honestly don’t know who understands that context and who doesn’t. If I was going as someone who was a different shade of color than me for Halloween, I’d use face makeup. Ah, I just remembered that I did that once. Good thing peewee Herman was just some pasty white guy

Only if it's on Heil Avenue.

But, considering it's an elementary school, probably better than dressing up as the child molester Zimmerman.

Do it. Totally suits your personality.

Unfortunately you don't have the balls to do things you vomit here in real life.

Only on erBB and hiding behind Proud Bois are you brave enough to spout your neo-fash garbage.

Once again, why do conservative leaning people have so much trouble understanding the whole cultural appropriation thing?

Hint for you guys as you go off to do your own research and inform yourselves: it's not necessarily a bad thing.
“You need to get educated, bro...”

Fuck you. You can culturally appropriate my dick.

I’m going to go make some tacos now you fucktard.

They are in poor taste and they are pretty damn funny.

Last year my son (he was 12) cross dressed, pink hair in pig tails, etc. I dressed like Max Hardcore and went TorTing with him.

I made a mental note of the neighbors who got it. Keep clear of them....
