What about white people wearing dreads? Cultural appropriation? But Vikings?

Black girls wearing a weave? Cultural appropriation again?

What about kilts? Must you be ethnically correct to wear one?

Kimonos? Asians only?

How much Native American blood do you need to have to make Pow Wow Chow?

White guys talking pidgin?

Once again, why do conservative leaning people have so much trouble understanding the whole cultural appropriation thing?

Hint for you guys as you go off to do your own research and inform yourselves: it's not necessarily a bad thing.

Everybody is culturally appropriating. All the time.

Thank God.

Is surfing cultural appropriation?

How about pants?

:dancing:

All that said if you're white and in this time and place you elect to dress up in black face and you are surprised by a negative reaction, you're not too bright.

The cultural appropriation thing as a negative is weird to me. Also not sure how much black face is really cultural appropriation.

Her comment didn’t really seem that bad to me.

I would say pretty much everyone who doesn't have a Tumblr account has trouble understanding it.

it's not a bad thing or a good thing - it's a made-up thing. i did some research ( here and here and it confirmed what i knew instinctively: cultural appropriation is largely a crock.

Cultural appropriation is the adoption of certain elements from another culture without the consent of people who belong to that culture.
everything is derivative in some way - culture gets adopted, passed on, borrowed, sampled, built upon, imitated and so it evolves. who "owns" certain styles, sounds, flavors, colors, dance moves etc etc ? and who gets to give (or withhold) consent? nobody, actually.

Marco Polo brought pasta from China back to Italy in the 13th century - was that cultural appropriation? and if i made spaghetti for dinner (or opened an Italian restaurant), am i appropriating from the appropriators? sheesh

Context doesn't matter when one of the cardinal SJW sins are committed

I demand Downey Jr. apologize to all of us now

People understand it just fine.

The problem is when its viewed as a negative thing as it nearly always is nowadays.

It really makes zero sense that the same people who want a borderless world with a single government as also pining for static, siloed cultures

As a centrist-moderate I have no opinion on any of this, nor am I inclined to attempt to develop any opinions about any of this.

Whether or not blackface is actually racist depends on your context, but it is not advisable for any reason since it will be looked at negatively (and does have a pretty bad track record). People who like to scream cultural appropriation are the biggest goddam losers I could ever imagine though.
