Actually rice, this post has inspired me. After discovering some delam forming in my everyday thruster, I've decided to put it up for sale at a local shop. My original plan was to get a Bulkley thruster as a replacement, but I've now decided to make the leap. I'm gonna have MC make me a bonzer designed around what I would typically ride on a head high day. Thanks for the perspir..... eerrrrr inspiration.

I actually don't think you'll have trouble with your first bonzer: a 7'6" Bonzer for big waves.

If, when you pick it up, there is a choice between center fin size, I would recommend the larger one.

Sure, it is just my preference, but when you can move the center fin around, it seems like you have more ability to affect a change with a bigger fin.

You have a very longwinded, verbose piece of mail. Just cut to the last paragraph. I think I drank too much coffee this AM.

Seems like an obvious question, but I'll ask it anyway because I am stupid. I know that Duncan lives on the North Shore. Does this mean that I'd be able to get custom Campbell Brothers Bonzers on Oahu? And, if the answer is yes, where would I go to get 'em?

Gracias.

And, who would be doing the glassing in the islands?

GWS, craig, others...
mind refreshing me on the basics regarding the position of the center fin on a 5-fin bonzer? Picked one up the other day, don't think it'll get much use till next winter time but...(6'9"x18.75x2.75) ...

fin all the up? all the way back?? In the middle???

Everyone is a little different, but start here...

Lay a straight edge across the trailing edge of the rear two runners. Put a mark in the pigment around the fin box where the trailing rear edge is with a pen. Now measure forward of that 1/8" or 1/4" and mark there. Place the leading edge of center fin on that mark. Start there and move it a 1/4" at a time if it doesn't feel right. Have fun!

That's the problem. Before RED-X or Lokbox, moonlight or Hakensons in SB were 2 of the few glasshops that could/would even do bonzers. With removables, this should bring in many more glassers(hawaii incl.) capable of doing the boards properly. Most glasshops wouldn't deal with the glass-on process that goes with the 5 fin bonzer. At least not for production anyways.

23rdstmb, rear fin goes at 5 and 3/4 in. up from the tail.

I'll give that a try, thanks for the tips GWS and JJR

Hey there.
Could any of you Bonzer-knowledgeable guys give me some info on center fin size (base x height), rake etc.
Thanks, much appreciated
Maz

My Bonzer is a good shape for head-high to DOH days, but I am currently stuck with it as an everyday board, so I've experimented a bit with the fins.

I started off with the stock 6-1/2" center fin at the recommended position (per GWS' post above). Moved it up a couple times, trying for a slightly more pivotal feel. Still wasn't getting quite what I wanted, but since I have the Red-X side fins, I was able to adjust those too. Bringing them all back slightly tightened up the fin cluster and the board came alive. In anything from fast shoulder-high waves, up to around DOH, it felt great. Dabbling with trying to free it up a little more in the smaller stuff, I've been trying a 6" cutaway fin in the center for the last few weeks. It feels OK, but if there's any juice, the loss of drive is very noticable (I accidentally left it in for a nasty day in Newport a couple weeks back with a bunch of BBers, and I was suffering on a few. Really guys....that's why I didn't go on those bomb sets! ). I'd like to try a 6" standard fin, or maybe a flex fin next.

For those considering new Bonzers, I can't say enough about removable fin systems such as Red-X or Lokbox. If I hadn't been able to adjust those side fins a bit, I'm not sure I'd still have the board. Instead, it's become my all-time favorite board in the wave sizes it was designed for. (now I just need a true small-wave board!)

edit: Maz - sorry, but I don't know the base & rake dims of the original center fin, but it's considered a "stock" Bonzer fin, per Malcolm's recommendations.

Hey Waldo.
Thanks for all the good oil. I found Bonzer fins on trueames.com, lots of nice looking fins there.
For your small wave needs, shape yourself a good fish. I did, and I've laughing - literally - ever since.
Have fun
Maz

Yeah, Maz - don't know where my brain was for not referring you straight to True Ames right away.
Glad you found them.

No idea yet what my small-wave board will be - I keep waffling between a BonzerFish, thruster, fish hybrid, or ???
