With all this bonzer talk, I'm getting a little interested in getting one. I know that you've suggested that one's first bonzer be a bonzer version of their favorite, everyday board, but for me, that's not going to happen in the near future.

What WILL happen is that I'll get a new semi-gun (7'4" - 7'6" pintail) shaped later this summer.

What are your thoughts on making this board my first bonzer? I haven't heard much about bigger-wave bonzers; more about shortboards, bonzerfish, pods, eggs, and longboards. Obviously, in the waves this board will be surfed in, I want something that'll handle well.

This board would be for DOH+ waves in and around the central coast.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

I would prefer you get an everyday board first. It’s not because the Bonzer won’t handle the larger stuff, because it will do great, I just think that DOH + waves are a shitty place to go to school on a new design that is a radical departure for you. Paddling out in serious waves on a board with, ‘I wonder if this thing is going to work?’ running through your head is not a good thing. That’s two strikes right there. Positive mental attitude, and confidence in what you are riding are good things to have going for you in bigger waves.

Not to say you can’t do what you suggest and pull it off. Maybe you’ll love it from wave one. I don’t know. I would not recommend you do it that way, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it that way.

Good advice; can't promise I'll heed it, but you're probably right.

If I do go ahead and get a bonzer 7'6", I figure I could take it out in OH+ waves at first to get the feel of it. Worst thing that would happen is I'd take a some donuts for a few sessions, no?

Thanks for the advice; I'll let you know when/if I decide.

Do you/have you ridden bonzers in the bigger stuff?

Fcuk that! Get one; they're proven in Hawaii. It probably does help to surf single fins first though.

Why not order two?

Am I a "bonzer boy" now?

At The Green Room there is a 7'4 Bonzer gun shaped by Rich Pavel, glassed at Moonlight, and in great condition. It has a huge Swedish flag on the deck (Stefan?) but at $225 it's a steal.

rice - If you want, you can borrow my 6'8" Bonzer for a while to see how you like it. It's pretty gunny, but I think it'd be thick enough for you. I doubt I'll have much of a chance to ride it during the SB summer anyhow.

Let me know.

Craig that is way to small for rice. He is taller then shaq onell or whatever his name is. But now that would be perfect for me! On one of those big ol south swells. it would be a perfect change for me to try a bonzer. Now there is the chance i will snap it. but i probally wont!

Rounded pin? How wide, again?

You know, I just might take you up on that. Get a few of the decent souths on it to see how it feels.

Thank you; I appreciate it. I'll let you know.

It's actually got a really drawn in swallow tail. Let me know. It probably won't make much of a difference to me either way. We're headed up to San Simeon on Saturday. So, I could drop it by your place on the way up, if you want to give it a go.

You can let CCG ride it, too. But he should know that the "you break it, you bought it" rule would apply.

Here's a pic of MLSurf's (whatever happened to that guy?) 7'4". He followed it up with cool pic of him shifting into 5th on a big east coast wall.

Order one from Malcolm now (he's very familiar with the area you surf) and it should be done by the end of summer and TFAD and I will drive up and deliver it.
Thanks for the advice, that sounds great; I'm leaning toward going for it. Seems like a 'drawback' to bonzers is the difficulty to do 'flicky' turns or slide the tail, and on the waves I want this board for, there won't be any flicking or sliding going on anyway.

Would it be completely sacrilegious to get it from Gary Hanel? I know Malcom is 'the man' but money is always a BIG issue for me. Plus, L8's GH bonzer looked pretty killer. We'll see.

So, where did you surf this past weekend? And what's the deal with your 6'7" pod out gunning 7'4"s? Sound great; I'd like to know more.

Thanks.

I don't know about flicking much but I can slide the tail around on a 7' Hanel egg. Nothing's holding you back.

Have fun.

In some circles, semem is considered an heirloom.
