You have VERY serious symptoms. STOP lifting and all explosive activity, or you will only further damage your spine and nerve. Don't talk to a surgeon either.

Get on a high dose course of steroids (Prednisone), which will reduce inflammation to manage your pain and form a protective sack of fluid around your nerve. Then you should be doing very conservative PT. Your body should heal itself if you take it slow. Hyperextension "press ups" will encourage the disc material to reabsorb. As pain and nerve function recover, you can slowly introduce appropriate levels of stress that will further encourage healing and make you less prone to similar injury in the future. If you want to left weights, they will be the VERY LAST phase of your recovery, which according to your symptoms is many months down the line.

Listen to your body. It's telling you that you are acutely and traumatically injured.

I can't believe people on this thread just overlooked this post of yours and continued talking about deadlifting. Hope you ignored all that bullshit. You are potentially jeopardizing proper nerve function if you continue. Ask Autoprax.

I think VM told him pretty much that- take it easy, do light activity, build it up slowly.

Also why would he take steroids if he is not in pain???

Also, if you read through this thread, and research a little, you will find ample scientific evidence that says telling someone they are "acutely and traumatically injured" is pretty much the worst thing you can do for them.


Feral, I'd be interested to hear what the MDs say about nerve surgery. I just severed a nerve in my finger and was told nerve reattachment surgery has only a 20% success rate. I declined the offer.

Hey dummy. Prednisone and other oral anti-inflammatory steroidal medicines have been proven ineffective for low back pain.


“Systemic steroids were not shown to provide benefit and should not be prescribed for patients with acute or subacute low back pain, even with radicular symptoms,” the guidelines stated.

V.M. what medical school did YOU go to, for ANYONE to take your "advice"?

I listened to "actual doctors" for 4 years feeding me the same B.S. as V.M is dishing out here.

Turned out, they were just trying to save the state some money. (Yes, socialized medicine has its drawbacks)

As soon as I went to a private neurosurgeon, he told me just exactly why it hurt so much it was driving me insane, to the point of contemplating suicide.

Thanks to one of the top 5 neurosurgeons in the world, I got fusion done in 2014.

2021, still manageable pain levels, without much pharmacological medication. Still surfing at 57, even shortboards.

Can not only feel below my waiste now, but actually get erections again.

So, yeah.... YMMV listening to someone whose medical credentials are well, non-existent, who dishes out B.S. on any topic freely, as if they were the only authorities on everything.

Best of luck to anyone suffering.

Bluengreen: Agreed-- except for one thing. Systemic steroids (like prednisone) may not do much ‘cause they’re taken orally. Systemic steroids compromise the immune system, as all steroids do, and that’s probably not the best thing to do now since we’re in a pandemic. Furthermore, the side effects are greater and will do less for the pain because the steroid will circulate through the bloodstream, which means that it is not targeting a certain area. If you wanna use steroids, the best way to go about it would be to use steroid injections, but even then there would only be a 60% chance that it would work. Just my take on this. Hope this helps!

Yes, you are right I must be sounding like one of those people. Although to put it into perspective my story which involves a variety of injuries spans decades. There was one physio I got nowhere with. It was a couple of decades ago and I must have spent fair bit of money before I figured it wasn't helping, on the other hand another physio did fix me for that problem. I don't have the answers for what specialist is going to help with what problem. I also don't know how much of the chiropractic I have paid for has been of direct benefit, the whole package that came with it coincided with my path to recovery from my troublesome back, but exactly how much I need I don't know.

I also have no proof that extra flexibility can protect against what you called "hyper extension", just a feeling from my taekwondo days that extra flexibility helps with "hyper extension" high kicks. Still on the subject of stretching, but a different angle I have been diagnosed as hyper mobile i.e very flexible, but despite this it has been convincingly shown to me that I am prone to getting tight in a couple of places, one of which did cause me problems (decades ago) and more recently another area which is asymptomatic - I stretch it anyway, but don't honestly know how important it is that I do so. I am built different to you, so you probably couldn't imagine what sort of issues I have to deal with.

On the other hand I haven't spent any money on personal trainers for strength training, instead I have picked up tips from various sources. Some of it from professionals that didn't cost me money, for example I've ended up in A&E twice in the last 6 years (fell off skateboard), in Australia whether we get a follow up appointment on the national health for non serious injuries seems to be random, but both those times I did get a follow up and been shown core strength and other exercises by the physio when I explained that it was my intention to return to surfing when recovered. Despite being the erBB weakling I have Arnold Schwarzenegger's massive encyclopedia of body building. That's a very readable book on what exercise does what and with what emphasis.

Weight training does not seem like rocket science to me, on the other hand getting fixed for stubborn injuries seems to require a black art and luck and that is why we are all here on this thread sharing different experiences.

Somewhere along the way surfers changed from rugged adventure seekers to sensitive waifs. Mickey Dora could assfuck anyone on todays WCT with little resistance. These guys surfed more for much longer than the pros of today....They could do real turns but they couldn't do airs so there's that. Why are pro and regular surfers injured so much nowadays?

I've met Dora, although he wasn't very interested in holding a conversation. He was living in a van in county Sligo and his companion was an Irish woman who knee paddled a longboard. I don't remember him putting in marathon sessions, on the other hand one of the campers got worried after I disappeared into the sea for hours. However I was in my early 20s then and he was already middle aged.

A fairly imposing appearance on his surfboard, a hunched shoulder style which came with quite a theatrical performance where he seemed to be able to treat his surfboard like a see-saw by lifting the nose out of the water, swiveling it around and placing it somewhere else on the wave. He did no nose riding - the pointed nose longboard would not have lent itself to that anyway. I noted that although there were tubes on offer when the wind was good for the right point I never saw him get tubed (not that I was getting any either, but then I'm not and have never been great at surfing).

Dora also seemed to have an aversion to going left. When the right point was blown out, there was sometimes a fun left breaking a short walk south. I asked him why he didn't surf it and he said "it had no guts". Not true. Despite what I am saying he was good to watch.

Oddly found it stuffed somewhere in the garage the other day. i think I bought it about 20 years ago. Took a round of steroids. Pain is gone. Totally functional now with the exception of the nerve issue affecting my calf.

For shits and giggles I scheduled a consult with a neurosurgeon to see what he has to say. It will take quite a lot to convince me to go that route. Not sure what is going to make the nerve issue go away. I have to permanent Numbness in two other places from two prior episodes about 4 years ago. Mire like sensory deficit mostly to the sensory of the skin.

I have an on going claim against my insurance company for a car accident I was involved in before all this started. They sent me to their neurosurgeon to check me out and he said I can’t believe you were never referred out to a surgeon by your doctors when he saw my MRIs and examined me.

Or maybe it will resolve when I get through this divorce and my ex pulls her head out of her ass and stops refusing to sell the house when the Notice of Default comes next week.

While I sat in the wheelchair awaiting my procedure, I met a couple of pro golfers and a pro football player (the rest of the worlds football, where the foot actually touches the ball), two professional snow people (1 female skiier 1 male snowboarder). Think it was one of the golfers who mentioned the 5th best in the world thing. All I know is among the mentioned above were a Swiss, a Korean, an American, a French and an Arab. The guy must know what he's doing to have people travelling from half a world away to pay him €300k to fix them, huh? Surely there's neurosurgeons in Saudi Arabia, Korea, France, Switzerland not to mention the USA.

Yeah, we all found him on the Playboy list of top 5, have some class!

Finding a neurosurgeon in Penthouse is like getting your lawyer out of the back of Rolling Stone! :shameonyou:

I too read Sarno's book... Remember at the beginning, where it said "BARRING NON-CORRECTIBLE PHYSICAL INJURY"?

Me? I had three vertebrae in very bad shape, no discs between them at all, the middle vertebrae calcified in places and turned to sand in others. Nerve loss, muscle loss, etc... No amount of squats nor deadlifts can help when you are physically broken, fractured. First, fix it.. then squat and deadlift to recover.

Otherwise you are just furthering the damage.

That's not my humble opinion, that's what the neurosurgeon who actually went to medical school, invented new procedures, taught other neurosurgeons his ground breaking procedures and operated on royalty said.

But yeah, I think it better to trust some kook who can "take Mike Tyson" strengthman on the interwebs word over a trained doctor.

isn't there a back surgery wheere they put in an artificial disc? think joe rogans jiu jitsu buddies did that. also tim hendricks had a procedure like this as well. he surfs too.

After the fusion surgery did you lose a lot of mobility? Has it hindered your surfing? How do you crouch for tubes?
