The lineup says he's in heat 5. The announcers don't seem to line up with what the heat sheets are saying(?)
Yah I'm confused listening to their calls and comparing. They said some Alternate was out there for Kelly, twice. But I see this is Heat 2 with Ross Clarke-Jones.

Makua just got a crazy drop with that big knee brace on.

Im sure that considering the big dirty conditions Kelly surmised it was beneath him. Ross Clarke found a good one. JAWS paddle ins kinda put the Eddie in the back seat. Still Waimea is a fun wave to watch.

They keep saying Slater is out. The sheet showed N. Florence and Kemper in heat 2. Super confusing. It's definitely a different broadcast vibe than last one with cameras on the beach and water, and you could hear the jet skis and crowd, sorta made you feel more at the event.

Steak, I would be very surprised if Kelly turned down the event. He loves the spotlight and respects the surfing traditions.

The history lesson feels forced in the commentary, wish they would just call the heat and chat...almost seems like they are reading from a script. How hard is it to post the surfers, jersey colors and scores? Considering the nssa does it I suspect it cant be too tough. Really makes following along from a long distance easier.

RCJ with the first big wave.
looks like he took a couple beatings too. mad respect for his charging - he's in his 50's. not quite the oldest contestant (think it's Michael Ho @ 65 y/o), but he's up there :jamon:

Yes they beach 'em. Then a bunch of crew guys on beach run over, flip the skis around and immediately push them back in the water.

Kai Lenny is owning it out there. Snags the biggest wave, then goes switch stance and rides through the shorebreak.

Slater ….. Always, the thinking strategist. The announcer said that he’s waiting for the Pipe Master for the opening round of 2023? Kelly’s the defending Champion?

The announcer said they didn't know why he opted out, and speculated that he was saving himself for Pipe and beginning of new WSL season.

Peter Mel just stuck a huge drop. He is so ridiculously talented in big surf.
