Since
@cstreet did ask for an explanation of why I compared the harassment of black people in the southern United States with the harassment of caucasians in Hawaii, I do have one explanation - two in fact; incidents of police harassment that I can recall in some detail.
One of the common tactics used in the southern part of the US to let black drivers know they are not welcome in a community is to follow them. The police will follow them for as long as it takes, until they do something that can be described on a citation as a "moving violation". They get an expensive ticket and learn fast - they are not welcome in that community.
One experience I had was on Nimitz Highway under the Airport freeway. I had left the main Post Office and turned right onto the highway when I noticed a police vehicle in my rear-view mirror. This officer had seen me in the Post Office parking lot - I saw him also. He followed me out to the highway and stayed right behind me - for 13 consecutive lights. I drove the speed limit and did nothing,
I finally pulled over at a bus stop and stopped, so he could pass me. He pulled over behind me and turned on his lights and siren. He turned them off and came up to the drivers side, standard "licence, registration and proof of insurance" request. I complied, and he wrote a citation for "Unsafe Lane Change" and gave it to me, saying "Go back to the mainland, haole".as he left.
I asked for a jury trial and prepared my statement, that this officer had deliberately followed me and harassed me because I was a caucasian - no other reason.
I did not get a chance to deliver my statement as a judge dismissed the citation for a procedural error. In the space for "Colour of Vehicle" the officer had written "SILVA" instead of "SILVER", as I was driving a silver Toyota at the time. So local, brah.
The other instance was on Kaukonahua Road to Waialua, one of the most dangerous roads on O'ahu, Fun to drive, but dangerous. The officer followed me closely through all the twists and turns, all the way to Waialua then hit his lights and siren and pulled me over. I gave my license, registration and proof of insurance and he wrote a citation for "Crossing Center Line" and "Reckless Driving", both untrue and literally threw the citation into my car and onto the floor.
As I already had a return ticket to South Africa, HNL HKG JNB HKG HNL, for the same time as the trial date, I paid the $85 fine - rather than cancel the ticket for a court date, but the charges were completely fabricated - he cited me because I was a haole, no other reason.
Are these incidents as bad as the black guy who got shot by rednecks in Georgia for "Jogging while Black" in a white neighborhood? No, they are not. But they are definitely
racially-motivated harassment from the police.
I am supposed to tolerate being harassed by the police in Hawaii because I am a caucasian, a haole?
No. Never. That is just wrong.
Racially motivated harassment from the police - another reason Hawaii is DONE.
