We lived in Honolulu in the late '50s, I was just a baby so I don't count. My two older brothers went to St. Patricks in Kaimuki, the younger of the two always had a chip on his shoulder, always had to be right, kind of an argumentative guy (still is to this day). He got the sh!t hassled out of him by the local kids and to this day says Hawaii is full of racist assholes. The older one, despite being fair-skinned and blond, is to this day mellow and curious and respectful, and reports having gotten along mostly pretty well with the local guys and looks back fondly on his years in Honolulu. Funny how that works.

some haoles are always going to act ha'ole
but the new mainland chinese visitors will always out ha'ole a white mainland ho'ale
especially on an airplane
no comparison
white don't mean ha'ole by default
white can be a "bruddah" or a "cuz"
just like a popolo can be a "royal hawaiian"
just look at Kamakakehau Fernandez
local/kamaaina versus malahini/transplant is a more important designation than race
