Use to surf without a leash all the time, pre 1965 longboard adds a whole other fitness element . I often wonder how many surfers could get in without their boards on bigger days.

Riding a long board always screwed me up for when I got on my short board.

I could surf leashless on a shitty long board pre 65 at a nice uncrowded point break.

I like surfing without a leash but in a crowd its a safety issue for others.
