sorry to post another computer question, but some of you guys are quite crafty with the keyboard, and its either get some advice here or pay $30 to go get it somewhere else...
so, my question is, if i decide to just wipe my harddrive clean and reinstall windows and all of the ADSL connection things and microsoft word etc. how do i actually do it? i'm running windows 98. what discs should i ensure that i have BEFORE i carry it out? i mean discs for reinstalling stuff, not saving it, as there isn't much i'd need to save. is it a really hard procedure to do, and does it involve complicated stuff, or is it fairly simple?
any help would be tremedously appreciated.

Are you gonna do a 'format C'? If your computer came with its own software then make sure you have that. Also download a copy of the Windows boot up disk just in case. If you have don't have a copy of your computer manufacturers software then make sure you have your Windows 98 disk.

hmmm...
maybe i should be more explicit, cuz a lot of that sounded like stuff i don't have, or don't know anything about.
basically, my small C drive is full. however, because i'm on a laptop there is also a "d" drive where i have all of my music etc. which has plenty of space, i am to understand that they are really the same drive, just divided into two. basically, if i delete stuff off of 'd', it does nothing for 'c'. so my solution was to just try and wipe the whole lot, and start over, downloading all of my program files to the 'd' section. do you think this is more trouble than its worth? what do i actually need to do to carry out this function?
thanx for the feedback.

well...thats a hum dinger.
normaly i recomend the "do it yourself" approach to computer repair. With a little guidance you are bound to do better than most joe-blows at the shop.
C: and D: on your computer occupy the same Hard Disk... But, they are "logicaly" 2 differnt drives.
Its like when 2 kids share a room and put tape down the center to devide it. One side can be cleaned and the other remain a haphazard collection of scattered toys.
there are a few things i need to know about your computer before we procede however.
A) is it a "Dell"?
b) How big is the hard drive?
if the answer to a) is NO, then we are all set!
You will need a complete list of your hardware and vital software (i.e. pronmaster 2k2, cd burning software, etc...)
To get your list of hardware, do the right click on "my computer" thingy, "Properties", "Device Manager". On there is a list of all the doo-dads in your 'puter.
You will need to write that all down (the device names) so you can find them on the disks that came with your computer. WHAT!?!?!? you didnt keep the disks!!!! OH NO!!! Now you have to download ALL, yes ALL of those drivers to drive D: (in a special folder named "Drivers" or something like that.
When you ahve all that, we will go on to step 2.
=o)

well james, thanks heaps for your help. the "d drive" is 1.81 gb, and the "c drive" is 1.99.
i did as you said and went in there...
there is a lot of stuff. i wouldn't have the slightest clue where to go to download that stuff, or if i can just cut and paste it into the d drive ( i tried that though, it didn't work ). do i need to re download all of that stuff from the internet or something? seems almost impossible as there are at least 50 things there.
does it get much more complicated than this? i'm not sure if i can hack it. i'm too afraid of just messing up my computer and having it stop working all together on me...should i try to just uninstall all of the programs possible on the "c drive" and reinstall them to the "d drive"? is there anything else i can do to just maximise space on the "c", other than just deleting old programs which i don't use (done)? thanx very much for your help.

Hmm...
If that be the case, I would stick to uninstalling from C:, Making a folder called "program files" on D:,
and then reinstalling to the "D:\program files" directory.
That is a darn safe way to clear up some space on C:
also hunt down and empty
c:\windows\temp
c:\windows\temporary internet files
c:\windows\cookies
that will help some.
As for downlaoding stuff
say dor example, you only need to get drivers for sound, video, cd roms, modems, Network cards... sutff like that.
They system board usua;y has its own drivers in windows.
Sheesh... complicated yet?
well... lemme know if there are any more questions
Jimmy the kook
=o)
