Who´s wave it is??

I had this doubt for a long time and was wondering what other surfers think about it.
I was about to drop on the right shoulder of a good wave a couple of days ago. I was really close to the peak, but while I was standing up I saw a guy dropping from the other side of the peak (I thought he would go left). But, as I was getting to the bottom I heard this guy coming from the left side of the peak, yelling the wave belonged to his. So, I pulled back and let him enjoy it.
Who´s wave it is??

disagree. it depends. if there was a makeable left, then the guy should go left. if not, then it was his.

if a wave can be split, it should be split.

his

in those situations, while paddling for the wave I try to ask the other guy "Going left or right?". If he's deeper and wants to go in same direction I'm consider, then it's his.

For a while it was both of your waves, but then it became his wave when you kicked out. The "rules" and "etiquette" related to "wave ownership" are in flux and there is no hard and fast rule any more. If a wave can be shared in any way, it should be shared.

He has the right of way technically but if he has an opportunity to share a peak then he should have gone left. It pisses me off when people don't split peaks.

maybe he is a regular foot and surfs better frontside. i would have said "hey, you goin right"? and if he said "yes", i would still pretend to go for the wave and scare him <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />

think about it this way. how did the other guy know that nico80 wasn't going left? nico80 was deepest for the left and would have priority that way!

gotta split it.

Thats his tough sh-t.

When I ask left or right?
And numbnuts doesn't answer.

I am not going to wait and see which direction he wants to go. That means, even if he is coming from the left behind the peak and going right.

I gave him an "OPTION" on first choice. He did not respond. I am dropping and he is getting stuffed.

When dropping in, if you don't know which direction your going before you get to your feet. Then you better just not even paddle for that wave.

Thats how SH!T happens. People hesitating, not sure what way they want to go. And by not communicating there intentions.

Then they wonder why they are involved in collisions, and busted or dinged boards. Or even an altercation.

Speak up and take charge of your intent. Or stay out of the way. OTF
