usually these kind of things just rob the beaches somewhere else but occasionally they work great. I know oc got a bunch of jetties back in the day.

Screw things up, more than likely.

Obviously, the sand that is SUPPOSED to be there isn't getting there. At every spot where there is a large Jetty blocking the Littoral flow of sand, Install a project similar to the Tweed River Bypass that allows the sand to migrate along the beach as normal. One result was the essential creation of The Superbank in AUS

I feel like I've heard about a few sand retention / artificial reef projects in Oz that have worked well.
I might be wrong though.

I remain fascinated by the ocean and erosion. No matter what technology we throw at it, the waves erode the land and the sand moves mysteriously.

Where that proposal loses me is with the use of "sand in fabric containers" . Not a fan of that part. They did something like that in my town to shore up dunes years ago and the "fabric containers" turned into an unsightly mess that is imbedded in the sand that emerges after storms.

So many things can go wrong when you start screwing with the sea-shore interface.

If it’s done with the intention of improving the surf, it will be a disaster. If not, there’s a chance. It won’t be another superbank.
