I pose this question for those who are familiar with Al Merrick's boards. Out of his line up of boards, if you had one board to handle knee high slop to 2X overhead waves what board would it you choose (if you were in my shoes)? I'm 5'6", 170 lbs(stockier surfer) thanks for your reply.

Flyer 2 is a good choice.

If it gets hollow a lot where you live, you'll be better off on an MX, TPH, or MBM (depending on how you surf). The flyer 2's tail always seemed to lift too much in the tube for me, but I rode my Flyer 2 well from about chest high all the way up to 7' backs one day in hawaii (that was pretty gnarly, it was the wrong board). It was also never a waist-high mush killer for me, thats what Flyers are for. Its a compromise.

At 152 lbs., I'd pick a 7'6" x 19" MSG.
Who cares about knee high to head high?
It only counts when it gets bigger.
Plenty of years, a 7'6" x 19 Brewer Morgan served as my smallest board and smallest wave board.

from down there, live up here
i'd rather grovel more in smaller surf and not be so worried when it finally DOES get good. i'd get a 6'4"x18.75x2.25 performance thruster. i'm 6'1" 160-165. it'd be a little more board than i need most of the time but would be plenty versatile. i would know, i have that exact board from ...lost.

im going against the grain here, cause if your living in socal or any other wave starved area, id rather be stoked on the headhigh and under days and worry about the few days it gets bigger. ive yet to need anyhting other then my favorite small wave board this winter.

Thanks for your reply. I was just wondering what size (length, width, and thickness) Flyer 2 you ride. And what is your weight and height? Thanks for your time.
I'm 6'4" 210lbs, and I rode my Flyer 2 as a 6'6" x 19 1/4" x 2 1/2". If you're a skilled surfer you could probably go with like a 5'10" or 6'0" about 18 3/4" wide? Since you're a "nonstandard" size you may just have to try a few combos of length and width to see what will work best for you. Flyer 2s are pretty forgiving and seem to work pretty well when they are a little long for the riders stance, unlike most shortboard designs ... which you might need to do since you are heavy for your height.

I also tend to agree with what Dan said, you might prefer 2 boards, like a 6'1" performance thruster and a 5'11" Flyer.

Bah-loney!!!

What "counts" is getting in the water, being connected to the sea, living aloha, and trying to surf your best in all conditions.

In my opinion Lee, what "counts" is surfing every day. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/socrazy.gif" alt="" />

I'd rather surf 6 good days a year than to subject myself to 150 crummy days of waist high garbage.
Gotta understand, I don't live in Hawaii and don't care to surf slow stuff or small stuff anymores.
You NEED to surf everyday, I don't.
Good for you, good for me.

I live about an hour from the surf.
Our season is normally Oct. thru Dec. ..I know, seems short.
Since July, I have paddled my 6'8"er more than 30 days till mid Dec. Surfed like maybe 12 days in that time.
Don't need to crowd the lineup with another Donkey <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Haven't surfed since Dec12, sprained my knee then, still haven't played tennis either.
