I had a chance to spend 2 summers down in Mexico. Nice and Large. Now I have the opportunity to go south for two months this winter. What should I expect in terms of size?

Any rec's on places to go that are good in the winter? (Further south is fine too?)

Thanks

Nice and medium, as S swells still come thru, and NW's can get down there. But like any vacation, you need to prepare for most anything likely, 4'-8'.
Chile, so you can report back to us how it is <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
Peru, but we already have an idea. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Punta de Mita and south has a nice swell window to the winter swells. The more westerly the better. I was there at the end of January a couple years ago at a well known point break and it was well over head but kinda sectiony as the swell was too north. Saw a beach break south of PV that was close to 3xOH on the same swell.

Think Gulf Coast, only more protected and with a barrier reef just E of you.
Consider log surfing, or fish on the best days of the week.

I've had friends tell me of being caught off guard with nuthin but a fish while partyin in cancun with the fam. - can occasionally get a decent little swell - and I gotta imagine that'd be in the winter or hurricane season-

hope ya score-

I surf in Tampico and Tuxpan, both in the Gulf of Mexico. From october to april we always have waves, and in jan-mar you can find nice chest to head high waves almost every day. Surfers from Texas go to Tuxpan in winter, and they ride small boards, in the 6'-6'4'' range. I ride a 7'2'' low rocker single fin, but last time I went surfing waves were about 7' very hollow and powerful, not good to my board, so I switched to my boogie board. There are about 100 surfers in Tampico and 40 in Tuxpan, but the waves are uncrowded most of the time. Hope this helps you

I live and surf in Tampico and Tuxpan, both in the Gulf coast. we have waves all year, but the best go from october - april. Usually from january to march we have waist to chest high waves every day, sometimes going to head high. Surfers from Texas go to Tuxpan in winter, the ride boards in the 6'-6'4'' range. I ride a 7'2'' single fin, low-rocker funboard, but the last time i went surfing in Tuxpan the waves were about 7' powerful and hollow, so I switched to my boogie board. Both places are beach breakes, with better lefts than rights. Tampico has the most powerful wave, but brakes in sections. IMO Tuxpan has a cleaner and longer wave. There are about 50 surfers in each city, but the waves are uncrowded most of the time.

There are many other spots, like Altamira, with bigger waves, north from Tampico. Cabo Rojo, near Tuxpan, Montepio Beach, 8 hours south from Tuxpan, I've only seen pictures of this place but looks awesome. In Cancun there's a spot named Chacmool, and in the external side of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel there are nice waves too.
