Babe Ruth, Tiger Woods, Jack, Magic, Lebron, Slater, Phelps, Brady, Pele, Wilt, Montan, Bird and Gretski were all great athletes but Jordan and Ali stand well above the rest.

1. Redefined superstardom from the MJ/Kobe school of always taking the last shot/iso ball to always making the right basketball play even if that meant an assist on the stat sheet instead of points in end of game situations. He took a lot of sh!t for that early in his career, now not so much.
2. First player to use his free agency and contract structure to control his destiny and set forth the modern era of player empowerment. Without that, KD doesn't go to the Warriors, and CP3 doesn't go to the Rockets. It changed the entire NBA landscape.
People can argue against that being good for the league (they'd be wrong IMO,) but they can't argue against LeBron's influence.
Part of my assessment is the way that MJ transcended the game and elevated the game to new heights both on and off the court. Today's NBA players owe more than they could ever repay to MJ in much the same way that PGA players owe so much of their wealth to the way Tiger Woods boosted professional golf from obscurity to huge purses.
