how exactly do you time the surf when its big, and you really dont feel like getting caught inside on your way out? i usually sit and watch for 10-15 minutes or so, and figure out exactly when to start paddling, so i make it out as quickly and easily as possible (this is important when the water is below 40* in the northeast).
also, theres an advantage to have a thicker board for better paddling power, but its also a disadvantage when you have to duckdive deep. which would be more important? thanks.
this is not fun when the water is in the 30's and the air is well below freezing (and this isnt even close to how big it can get in the winter)--localswell.com
[This message has been edited by noreastsurf (edited 12-15-2002).]

I surfed in Spring Lake.. It was macking.
I heard the hook was fun but only like 3-4 and maybe bigger but real clean and fun. I just paddled out local cause it was going off. Got a few hold downs but survived!

Ride the board that is most suitable for catching and riding the waves you will face that day. Time it for a lull if possible and paddle with a relaxed stroke that you can sustain, not a rushing sprint-like stroke that will tire you out. Also jumping off the end of a dock/pier/jetty beyond the waves is a nice way to avoid battling to get outside.

longislandsurfer- theres no way the cove was DOH yesterday. if the cove was DOH then every other break in jersey would be TOH. the cove is always smaller than nearby breaks, but it sure is fun.
aikaugoes- how big was spring lake? the belmar cam looked to be around 8ft+, but sometimes that cam makes it look bigger than it really is.

I dropped in on a couple doh sets. It was a weird swell, kinda shifty with alot of water moving (current). The smaller (3ft oh) were a little more lined up with no sections the doh were a little unpreditable with sections and crazy makable tubes...
