The best pizza?

Are you baiting us?

Because if Pizza Hut is the best you've had, I'm kind of busted up about that.

You owe it to yourself and your friends to seek out only the best pizza in your town and stick with that pizzeria, support them, because I tell you what: it ain't gonna be any chain restaurant like the Hut or Round Table or Little Caesar's or any of that crap. It's going to be some obscure but well worn joint with a PROPHET and MASTER standing there near the window or maybe in back by the brick oven, throwing dough. Yes, making a real pizza. Thin crust, New York style. Cheese only, or if you're feeling adventurous maybe cheese and pepperoni or cheese and anchovie and onion.

You have to seek out the pizza places. Start with the phone book because some of the good places aren't on the internet. Recon one some weeknight and see how good it is. Really taste the pizza. See how thin it is. Watch how when you pick it up off the pan, it slops gently downwards but cheese doesn't go sliding off of it. Test the membrane, that thin layer of crust with the goo on top from the bottom of the sauce ... it should be nearly invisible and never soupy. This is an art as much of a science my friend and don't kid yourself. American is fraught with horrible pizza. Simply disgusting creations by neaderthals. Don't get in line with the cows and they lead their tastebuds towards the slaughter of mediocrity. Break out and break away and seek and ye shall find.

Check out this book: "American Pie: My Search for the Perfect Pizza" by Peter Reinhart. That's a good start. Understand the rules and part of the magic. Then go out and discover the dedicated tradesman in your town who has dedicated himself body and soul to making pizza. These men exist. They love life and they love pizza. They learned all the rules and them broke them in their quest for understanding and perfection.

And check out this website, it contains a list of good pizza restaurants across the country, but again, start with your local yellow pages, old school style: Pizza Wisdom Here

Do it and enter a world of true artistry.

I am a pizza eating machine and it is by far my favorite food. Ive had millions of different pizzas, and Uncle Lous in Chicago is by far the best. Nothing compares.

Hey Nep,
No, I wasn;t baiting you. I live in VA and there isnt a heck of a lot of real pizza places here. When I lived in NJ there were some good ones there, but here it is almost all chains. The thing that gets me about the chains is how they cook a pizza on a conveyor belt, without the big pizza oven. I will always miss that about a true pizza joint.

Lynchburg: Vitos Pizza
"...People say it is the best in Lynchburg and Roanoke VA."

Midlothian: Gino's
"The service plus just the right amount of sauce and cheese."

Norfolk: Cafe 21
"The pizza is simply the best by far. Eveything about it was heavenly."

Richmond: Bottoms Up Pizza
"Sourdough Crust with distinct olive oil taste...Just the right combo of everything with a great selection..."

Roanoke: Frank's Pizza
"This pizza rocks! It's like real New York pizza in Virginia, only BETTER.
Decor is hokie, but I insist on going every time I'm in town."

Roanoke: Jimmy V's
"The toppings make it good, plenty of them and quite a variety!"

Virginia Beach: Sal's Bella Pizza
"...family operated- father is from Italy and mother from Philly. The pizza is New York style- best sauce and cheese on the East Coast..."

Dude, Napolis in Va. Bch. It's run by some Italian guy from Long island. Great Pizza. Then theres Sal Bellas, The whole family runs the place. They are part Greek. The 2 daughters are some real hotties too. Best philly cheese in the area. Pizza is good but not quite as good as Napolis.

I really shouldn't get involved in this as I live on the Lower East Side of Manhattan but I have to say Sal at Rosarios makes the best pie in the area, there is alot of crappy pizza in NYC but there is a ton of great pizza!! I love pizza but would rather that NYC had great waves!

There is no NY pizza kitchen in New York so it must be a SoCal thing hiding behind a NY name!
Cap'nn I know your game "I'm trying to start a heated sandwich debate since I don't participate in political debates. I really want to debate about something"

sound familiar! You know I'm right on this one

One thing for sure is that Southern California has, without a doubt, the finest pizza in America, perhaps the world, superior to anywhere on the east coast and most places in Italy, where it hasn't evolved and they're still making pizza with tomatoes instead of sauce.
Oh dear lord in heaven please tell me you are kidding.

It's far from traditional, but I love CPK.
Mario's in Westwood Villiage used to make an outstandingly light thin crust (haven't ben for about 10 years though - dunno if they're still there.)
Lamonica's, also in Westwood, is my favorite place from ultra-greasy pie by the slice.

But I still haven't found a great pizza place here in the HB/SB/Newp area. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/bawling.gif" alt="" />
Any recommendations would be most appreciated.
