Hey everybody, I'm headed to Costa Rica in mid March and am probably gonna be at a camp and want to know the best spot that time of year (best waves, small crowds). Witch's Rock Camp is in Tamarindo, Third World Surf Camp in Playa Jaco and Hermosa, Azul Surf Camp in Mal Pais, and Green Iguana in Dominical. I'm leaning towards Mal Pais or Jaco for March although I've always wanted to surf Witch's and those spots. Also Ill be doing some freedive spearfishing/scuba...anybody know where I wanna be for that? Thanks alot...peace

East Coast......Cold Water
I love JACO cause it is close to such a great variety of breaks, and pretty good resturants and night life. HERMOSA(the tree, pig farm, toline) HEAVY beach break jaco fun night sech, ESCON great reef break and only 10 min drive and boat trip stay away on wendsdays very crowded, Boca Baranca only go there if it is realy big at hermosa you will get the longest left of your life and verry rippable(hour drive but worth it) you don't need a camp rent a car and explore.....We stay at the Paraiso del sol 506-643-3250(pool,Bar,and guarded parking) owned by an American(Matt) and pretty cheap realy nice place 1 block from jaco beach. Pick up the SURFERS GUIDE TO COSTA RICA at a surf shop its worth it.
P.S. I think the winds are off shore more this time of year in JACO

I'm gonna have to agree with KENIKE, I've been to the North Coast at least three times (always Late November) and have had ok surf. I agree that Witch's makes that area attractive, but I've never made the effort to put a trip together to get up there. From what I've heard it can be fickel, and it's a commitment to get to it, it is remote!

Jaco/Hermosa has some the best surf going from my experience. Hermosa really works well on a South, but will usually has some pretty decent surf regardless. Jaco/Hermosa offers a lot of different waves, Heavy Hollow beachbreakes, Roco Loco, which can be mind blowing! Surf it with someone who know's it, and Jaco is a safe bet if Hermosa is too heavy.

Diving ??? I've gone diving in Playa Coco years ago and it was fair at best. The visibility on the Pacific side is not all that great, 20ft at best when I was there.

Good luck, post some pics when you get back. If you're doing the surfcamp thing, check out Loma Del mar, I worked there for a couple of months about 5 years ago, Richard Garrison runs the place and he's a pretty good guy, will get you to beach before sunrise everyday, and depending if the boat is working can get you to Escon if it's working.

Good Luck!

Hey...I am going at the end of March. I was down there in August as well. Love it down there. I am going to split the trip between Tamarindo and Hermosa. Playa Grande, Avellanas and Witches are all fun. Good night life. You have to go to Hermosa as well. Great beach break. Hollow!!!!!!!! Should be fun in March. shouldnt get too big until summer.

ya that's what id like to do too,...ideally id split up the time between hermosa/jaco and tamarindo. However i'm only down there for 6 days so to get all the surf and a little diving i need we might go to Mal Pais, which i have heard is good for both. Does anyone know about Mal Pais at all???

Never been but have heard good things. You may want to play it safe and hit up Hermosa. 2 hours from the airport. Lots of peaks.......

Ive heard of two Hermosa beaches in Costa though, one near Jaco west of San Jose and another Hermosa near Mal Pais on the tip of the peninsula. Which one of these are people mostly praising here?? thanks..pc

hows the weather, crowds, surf in tamarindo during the summer months? Im thinking of going there around aug 10???

I know the place picks up swell easy, but at the same time, im not looking for epic surf. I want to enjoy this trip in terms of relaxation and hanging out with my gf.
