Has anybody gone down to Peru for a surf trip before. I am thinking about going there this May and was looking for a little advice. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I was down in Punta Hermosa (Pico Alto Surf Camp) Jan 2004 had a blast. Consistent waves, cheap living. Oscar Morante runs the camp takes care of the details for you. Has an excellent staff. Pay to have your bags wrapped in hat cellophane stuff flying back out of Lima airport

Great vibe in the water, most spots had about 8 - 15 people MAX. Got some great days with only about 4-5 people out. Spring suits & 3/2's work until their winter (our summer ) then a 4/3 might be good idea. booties and reef booties are a good idea, very rocky. Most spots break a little far out good paddling boards help Bring some warmer clothes take a flight ($160 US) to Cusco and train to Machu Picchu...Awe inspiring.

Same as above. I went there sept 04 and went up north, to dreamy chicama. Stay at Huanchaco, a suburb of Trujillo, and Keep checking the internet( a lot of cafes) for the swell. Once U see it will hit, arrange the day-trip to chicama. In Huanchaco, go talk to Carlos, at the surfing school. He'll help u out with anything, and introduce u to some of the locals (Very friendlly and very good surfers). Those guys are so nice that a gave my board bag , a leash, and a wax bar to the scholl. Plus I sold a Very nice and new board for U$50 to one of them.

U can also stay at pacasmayo or right at the point in chicama, but it's so ugly and dull U'll kill yself. In huanchaco it's more consistent and there's some great waves, plus a nicer view (dont expect much) Great food and some nightlife (gringos and locals hanging out and dancing toguether).

Plus, u can go to Mancora and ecuador to some warmer water.

BTW, Chicama was 4 ft, offshore and sunny (rare!!). I got tired of WALKING back to the peak.

Can someone please explain to me what the waves are like in the Pico Alto Surf Camp Region? What type of waves are offered and whats the overall quality like? Does Central Peru have better quality surf?

You must go and you will go again. Pico Alto is definitely a must. All the folk are good. Don't worry about waves. They will put you on anything you want and probably more. I've also rented a car there and travelled to Puemape and Chicama alone...no problem... last morning at Chicama only one out at the point..not bad for a 54 year old surfer from Texas. If you go to Pico Alto say hi to Ito...tell him I named my dog after him.

No major secrets here. It's just that since Peru has *cold* water, it isn't known as a surf travel destination. Plus - the weather is like California in the Fall/Winter (high of 60's during the day). I've never been but the temptation of LONG left points with barely any crowds are really starting to creep into my brain.
