I surf pretty much everyday and i was surfin for 5 hrs today.. and im sore as ****..

but i was wondering..
when you workout(lift weights) you have to have rest days and normally if u lift hard should only lift that muscle group once a week

How about surfing...
Do i need rest days? or can i surf EVERYDAY and my Muscles will get STRONGER?

Just wondering cuz if all this soreness means imma get a good bit stronger thats a good thing to know <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Also... if im lifting weights.. can i lift on the same day i surf?

And What Specific exercises would u suggest for surfing.. like whts the best shoulder, best back, best legs, best abs..
im thinkin my top ones are gonna be military press, shrugs, and maybe pullups/deadlifts...
im guessing zones that need the most targeting are side of shoulders and upper back.

Hey
Actually, the new medical thought for training is evolving constantly
I used to think that everyone except beginners needed some days off to recharge both the mental and physical batteries. Now, however, it's the word "moderation" that comes into play even when you are waay burned out from constant, relentless activity.
Kinda like the Tour de France, where they still ride 2 hours on their off days.
Since our body, diets, mental outlook, and goals are different in each of us, you are treading on new, unclear ground.
I'd say, if you can still perform at a high level, then keep surfing.
I don't know why you need to be stronger, but following Laird and some guys, it can only hurt your ability to ride tiny, slow waves.
You can be the test case for 7 days a week strenous workouts, if it works for you.
For me, I like to do my sports 4 days a week, maybe 5 at the most, and recharge those worn out batteries.
Good luck, ....is your goal to be a surfer or Arnold Swarz. None of the studly guys really surf with grace, precision, quickness, speed, or control, but they can get waves over us little pencil necks.

ok, i dont want muscle MASS.. i just want to be stronger and have more endurance so that i wont miss all the waves that i miss.. i hate paddling out.. a perfect waves comes but i have no energy cuz i was just paddlin out.. or i paddle for a wave.. miss it.. paddle for another with less energy.. miss it.. paddle for another in the set.. and miss it.. and then barely have energy to paddle out again.

In the summer ive been goin surfin almost everyday.. id say i miss maybe 1 to 2 at the most days out of the week.. so i go surfing at the least 5 days a week...
In the school year it will be 1, maybe 2, and at the most 3 days a week(if im allowed to do it on weekdays..i highly doubt it tho)

Im trying to work the muscles that re used in surfing.. hence why i have multiple exercises for Back,SHoulder,Legs,Abs .. and only 1 for chest and 1 for triceps.. and none for biceps

I was wondering tho if i can workout on the same days i can surf... or will that be like 2 workouts in the same day and add up to me not getting stronger?

Lost0rz,
You can for sure workout and surf in the same day. Look at all of the pro athletes, they will lift and play as well. It is just done at different levels of intensity. It sound like your workouts are just not intense enough. If you are getting tired after going for 2-3 waves, you need to kick it up. I would do some "functional" circuit training, that's what we do with alot of our surfers. Doing shrugs is not going to help your surfing, but it will give you strong traps.
Start with some total body circuits,(no machines) Start with a leg exercise, followed by a pushing movement, a pulling movement, a core("AB") exercise and some type of balance. This may be good for you.
Checkout our site for more exercise tips. Also on www.sistersofthesea.org/exercise.htm is a good article on core training.

Hey LO
Think about that one a bit. Aren't the big wave surfers the guys who need the best paddling muscles? Now look at Mike Parsons! Now go down the line.....all of them are not fat slobs or anemic Biafran concentration camp refugees, they are slightly muscular, thin, in shape atheletes, similar to tennis players and basketball players.
Sure, some are stocky in build, that's hereditary, not trained.
Arnold Swarz in his prime could not paddle any better than a surfer who surfs 4 days a week for 4 years.
Muscle is good to have, but too much just means that not only do you have to constantly feed it, you have to drag it around.
During the interview portion of Special Forces Candidacy, the master sargent said I was close to "perfect" physical build at 5'10", 150 lbs., in B+ surfing shape, can run 3 miles in 16 minutes, the minimal 50 pushups, 15 pullups, and 60 situps in 75 seconds.
Don't need to be physically "Superman" to do human things.
Even the top surfers get tired and miss waves after surfing hard for 3.5 hours. That's human. Getting stronger won't help at all.

There is a big difference between traiing for mass, strength, and endurance. I have been lifting weights for threee years now. Even though I push myself the whole time I am in the weight room--to the point of failure--I am in no way heavier then I should be. I play water polo 15 hours a week, and lift 4 hours a week, and have been surfing about 14 hours a week, and have eliminated almost all of the long term soreness. Most people believe you need to rest your muscles by taking a day off. But instead, getting a few more hours of sleep is alot more effective as your body will repair itself at a quiker rate then say if you were partying. Feed yourself right, and get plenty of rest. Lift for endurance, more reps and less weight. Soon you will start feeling the pain ease and you will have so much more energy. Look at the thread regarding Surf Diet, and there are many good tips from the guys here.
