Great event last night at the Turtle Bay. Although I was a "date" (+1) for Triple Crown Faith, I felt closer to the papparazzi media crew. Best moment for me is when Jock Sutherland came by. Saw him a few weeks ago at Pipe. He complimented me on my choice of fashion. I told him Dick Brewer shirt from Kahala. He had the same shirt, different color! Then he pointed to a board on my shirt just above the pocket and said that was the board Brewer made for him that he won a Duke contest on. Classic!

More pics to come.

Jock picked me up hitching back from Lani's when I first moved to Hawaii. I was freakin tripping out thinking to myself, "Did Jock Sutherland just give me a freaking ride?" Classic.

Jock is like the Bill Lee of surfing. A true 'spaceman'. Class act and a brilliant surfer in his day. He's always been on a different wavelength. From back in the day when surfers were individuals instead of sheep.

From what I've seen of Jock in movies and magazines through the years, he was never the most radical surfer, but would be in the most radical of positions on a wave, uptight, outasite and in the groove. Dane Reynolds did'nt let the crowd down accepting his award with I think the funniest acceptance speech. Bruce showed a lot of courage accepting Andy's award. The most touching was from this little girl who has cystic fibrosis, telling the crowd how stoked she is to be a surfer, thanking the Mauli Ola Foundation that works with kids with her condition, almost had me in tears. Sal Masekela and Freddy P. did a great job MCing.

That was the thing about Jock. Impossible positions made to look easy. Many folks don't realize his place in the Pipe lineage. First there was Butch, then Jock, then Lopez. Sutherland is the link between Butch in the longboard era and what became possible with shorter boards. He was possibly the first to do intentional sideslips at Pipe while in the pocket. Then, there's his penchant for going switchfoot at Waimea and the way he would fade deep at Sunset. Really deep. BK was his only rival in that department. For a brief time, Jock was ahead of the rest of us by leaps and bounds.
