Quit your bitching. Surfboards should cost way more than they do; people who make surfboards should make way more than they do.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane. My first board that I bought new was a red plastic fantastic, 6 foot single fin, purdchased in huntington in 1970. It cost around a hundred bucks, and a full body glove suit was 30, and wasn't worth ten. It was still better than spending the winter hypothermic, which I did for the 4 grommet years prior.

The only thing I disagree with in the article is the connection of modern shaping to the historical hawaiian, I don't see it, maybe in the 40's and early 50's, but not since the introduction of fiberglass cloth and resins. Certainly not since foam.

If you're really interested in figuring this out, click on this inflation calculator, and plug in your numbers.

My first "new" board was a 6'0 Surfboards Hawaii twin fin, bought in the summer of '81 for $285 (I remember the amount because my Mom was freaking that I was blowing all my savings on such an "expensive" surfboard).

According to this inflation calculator, that same board would now cost $634.41

That's just an inflation calculation. Other "cost of doing business" have probably increased faster than inflation.

I'm no economist but some of my friends are. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
