My little lady and I are both graduating our respective degree programs in a few weeks, and our parents have hinted that they would be willing to be moderatly generous with graduation gifts. The first thing that came to my mind was, of course, surf trip!!

Where would be a good destination? I want bang-for-the-buck, ease of shipment of surfboards, low crowds, some nightlife, some beginnner waves for my girl, some slighly more than beginner waves for myself... And I don't want to be totally tapped out, cashwise. I've thought about CR, as well as jamekya. My little woman used to live in the Dominican Republic, so that might be an option too. I noticed the "cabarete surf camp" seems to have some moderately priced accomodations..

But really, I'm totally open to suggestions. The only real requirements are warm water and ridable surf, and good prices.

So... Suggestions?

I know it is not uncrowded at all, and it is somewhat overrun with tourists but you seriously can not beat Costa Rica for what you are looking for. Consider all the options for activities, amnenitities that'll be satisfying for both you and your girl, as well as ease of access from your location...CR is a no brainer.

If you aren't that good of a surfer, you'll be pushed just enough. If you are a decent-to-good surfer, it'll be a cake walk. I'm taking my girl (her first time there) at the end of May and we decided upon CR b/c of all the factors above. If I was going solo, I'd be headed to either Peru, Nicaragua, or mosquito infested/hot-as-an-oven Pavones (Costa Rica).

I agree. My wife has surfed for 8 yrs but will never be ready to surf some of the waves I still want to. We went to Costa Rica for 6 weeks for our honeymoon and it was the perfect place to go. Drove from Cabo Matapalo all the way up to Playas Del Coco. If you feel like being a little more adventurous and want to go to a place with fewer people, go to Panama. It's like CR was 15 years ago. Went last year and had a good time. The only drawback is, I would tend to take my wife to CR or Panama in the Dry season (ie Jan, Feb, Mar) which we have just passed. The wet season is still manageable, but not quite as pleasant.

Wow, sounds like CR is the prime choice!

Anyone here ever surf Dominican Republic? What about the Jamaica surfcamps? Ever try the "other" central american countries; el salvador, nicaragua, guatemala, panama, etc...?

CR sounds like an awesome destination, we have a 2 month old and my wife said that when the baby turns one she would like the three of us to take a surf trip together (and insisted that I should take one by myself in between, because I shouldn't have to wait that long-and no, I slipped her no roofies, she IS that cool). I'm rambling. My question was, how "baby friendly" would CR be as well. Keep in mind we camp out in Baja all the time, the wife can handle roughing it, but it would be nice for our first trip together it was easy on her with our baby. Is CR still a good call for this? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/shrug.gif" alt="" />

Almost as good as anywhere. The great thing about CR is that you can either slum it, or stay in nice hotels. My wife and I did both on our honeymoon. I have been to CR about 8 times over the past 15 years. We now have two boys. 3 y/o and 10 m/o. Let me tell ya. One kid is alot easier then two at the beginning. We had our lives wired with just one kid. Still trying to figure it out with two (getting close). I would travel as much as possible with the first kid. Try to get your kid on as much normal food as possible before your trip. This will make feeding him/her alot easier.

Try to go in February. By far the best month regarding weather and wind conditions. Wind blows offshore all day on the Guanacastle peninsula (almost too hard sometimes). Sometime in mid March the wind starts changing back to onshore in the late morning.
